I just received a "second chance" bid opportunity on ebay and now am the proud owner of the Hawaiian Cent to go along with the four 1883 silvers. I don't have the coin in hand but am posting the link. I am soliciting thoughts as to grade and whether you think the coin might be delaminating. They were 100% copper and I have no clue if/how the planchets were layered. Paleoguy45 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...L:OC:US:1123

congrats pg - it does look like some delamination going but still a very nice buy with less than 12K coins left after melting. In looking up your coins I notice there is also an 1883 HAPAWALU, silver eighth dollar. Is that also something you will be looking to add to the set?

Thanks for the opinion on the coin JR. The eighth dollar was never issued. It was only struck as a proof coin (total of 20), so I'm not considering it as an additional one to go after. Same goes with the 1881 Five Cent Piece. The four 1883 silvers (dime, quarter, half dollar and one "dala") along with the 1851 Cent are the only Hawaii-unique circulated coins, plantation tokens notwithstanding. PG

Certainly will.. The dollar is at NGC, but when they all find their way home, I'll put em up.

Hi...have you had anyone who's an expert on these take a look and confirm your coin? The reason I ask, is that the details on the king's uniform and wreath look a bit weak, planchet defect nonwithstanding. I know there are different die pairs, but something just doesn't feel right. But, I'm hardly an expert here...I hope I'm proven wrong!

I appreciate your concern and welcome any and all inputs. The coin you displayed is the "15 berry" reverse and not the "13 berry" reverse as is my coin. Both are valid issues. Rest assured though, I will eagle eye mine when it arrives.

Looking for other opinions on the authenticity of this coin. I'm starting to see some differences as well - with the 13 berry flavor....

PG - looks authentic to me - 6 varieties, only 2 the tunic laps over the 4, the other 4 varieties laps over the 7. From Wikipedia Quote: Medcalf & Russell numbers
* 2CC-1 HAPA HANELI (part of a hundred, one cent) 1847, Crosslet 4 (tunic laps over 4) - "Large Bust" rev. 18 berries (9x9) * 2CC-2 HAPA HANELI (part of a hundred, one cent) 1847, Crosslet 4 (tunic laps over 4) - "Large Bust" rev. 15 berries (7x8) Yours appears to be 2CC-2

Congrats on the full series PG ... hoping you show some photos of all of them when you have the set together in hand. Wish I could offer some support on the authenticity question ... but I know zero on the series ... other than the absolute fact that I like them. David

Thanks to all for your help. After further examination, I agree that it is likely authentic. I found one on Goldberg Auctions that matches to a "T"... The mouth had me worried; but, depending on the variety, good King Kamehameha had either a smile or half frown.

Put this one in your pipe and smoke it! Just got my Hawaiian Dollar back from NGC in a body bag... Says "Not Genuine".... I honestly don't believe that. It weighs less than .1 of a gram light and when dropped in a blind test with its Morgan cousin, you cannot tell the difference in sound. Also, I've compared it to a second slabbed one in hand and there is absolutely no discernible difference in the two. As a coda to this latest Chinese Fire Drill (pardon the inference) my local coin dealer also sent off a 1936 Washington Proof Quarter in the same batch that I had traded him and it came back MS (polished to look like Proof). Excuuuuuuuuse moi but I had bought the Proof on Heritage in February IN A NGC SLAB graded PF-63. What the HEY is going on with these guys (other than taking my $50 a pop and returning body bags). The Hawaiian Dollar is going to ANACS next week. If it comes back from them as not genuine then I will fight a good fight to get my money back from ebay. Anyone taking bets on how it will come back from ANACS?

Here's the final group (for now).... Laser lettering (in Hawaiian of course), hole drilling and mounting to follow. PG
