As I've mentioned in other threads, I have a 6-year-old son who is starting to get interested in coin collecting. In fact, it was his interest in the State Quarter program that got me back into collecting after a very long hiatus. I have periodically given him some low-grade "unusual" coins such as Buffalo nickels, Indian Head cents, Liberty Head Nickels, etc., and I recently picked up a framed "Coins of the 20th Century" set that I'll give him when he turns 7 in January.

Anyway, he is also starting to lose his baby teeth and I, as the resident representative of the Tooth Fairy, have been having a little fun instead of just sticking quarters under his pillow. For his first two teeth, he got a modern Presidential "golden" Dollar. For his next tooth, he got a Susan B. Anthony dollar. He lost another one yesterday and I decided to give him a Proof Bicentennial Eisenhower dollar.

I'm pretty sure he suspects who the Tooth Fairy "really" is, since he came into the kitchen this morning while I was making breakfast and said, "Do you know what I would say to the Tooth Fairy if she were here right now? I'd say 'thank you!'"

On the other hand, though, when he woke up this morning and found his treasure, he ran to me and said, "Guess what the Tooth Fairy brought me?", so maybe not...

Anyway, I told him that the Tooth Fairy must know he likes to collect coins and that is why she is giving him special stuff. Of course, he then asked if maybe the Tooth Fairy would bring him a Morgan dollar next time, and I said I didn't think so...

I've been giving my 6 year old daughter Ike dollars when she looses a tooth. She calls them the big quarters. The other day I got a package with a few proof IKEs in it and when I opened it she said "you got some Tooth Fairy Dollars" I always buy them back from her so she can have real dollars at the store and I can keep my Tooth Fairy Dollars for next time.

You started it so don't get cheap on him now.
Just kidding, but I was thinking the same thing after reading half way through your post. Here is an Idea. With the holidays coming up, and if he happens to lose a tooth during that time frame, a Morgan under the pillow would be something he would never forget.

I'm guessing that was at least a few years ago, back before silver hit $40+/ounce...

Actually, it was within the last couple of months. Part of me thought, "I wished I lived at your house," but part of me also thought, "that's unfair to the kids... they can't spend it."
Rest in Peace

Next time, give the little greedhead a quarter and a note that says "if I have to come back, I'm bringing my pliers and taking them all!"

I have been giving my child Sacagewea dollars when he looses a tooth. I think Ike's would have been even better, but I didn't have any on hand when I started the process just didn't spend that much time thinking about it.

I LOL'ed when I read your child asked for a Morgan dollar.

biggfred => man, your lucky kids must brush their teeth several times a day, to prevent a repeat visit from the night-monster and his dirty pliers! (keep-up the good work!)

Rest in Peace
