I have posted in another thread that for the longest time PCGS would not give 70 grades to the 2006 w and I think I know why . It is a rim problem that I have seen in the 06 and 11 w issues and could not believe that these are graded 70. I finally got a high res pic to show what I mean this is an 07 notice rim edge at top of obverse where the reed hits rim is so close to the field its not funny. These off center strikes are getting a lot of 70 grades ! http://www.auctiva.com/hostedimages...0,0&format=0

I know some believe PCGS to be stricter on grading, but I've got a couple raw and NGC MS 70s for 2007 and 2008. My 2006 in the 20th Anniversary set is a 69. I'll have to pull my raw ones and look at the rims. I hadn't noticed that. The slabbed ones are in the older holder so the rims can't be viewed well.

I bought 2 2011w burnished raw from the mint when they first came out and both coins look like this scan or worse . In the same spot too.

Is this what you are referring to? This is a 2011 Burnished W mm. Areas marked #1 are the 12 o'clock, while areas marked #2 are the 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock rim areas to the left and right of 12 o'clock. The rim top dead center does appear slightly more narrow than the rest of the rim. I don't think the quality of this coin is affected though. Its a beautiful raw 70.

You got it buddy, great pics i have seen this with many w minted ms eagles from 06 on. i think it is just an off center strike I thought for most that makes it a 69 but whatever I got my ms 70 2011w from ngc and it looks like your pics. still a sweet coin!

PCGS would not give a 70 grade to those 2006 W's because of the potential for milk spotting. They reversed this decision when all those coins started to go to NGC for the appropriate grading.

Slight misaligned dies has no effect on the coins grade.

Why not? Would a misaligned die not be considered a defect, or at least, less than perfect? Baseball cards and paper money are not considered perfect if they aren't centered precisely.

@CelticKnot - If it's within the standard accepted threshold (as these seem to be, although it could be close) it's not considered an error or something that will affect the grade. Baseball cards, I would think, have a much narrower threshold than coins simply due to the manufacturing process.
