I have a question.A broadstrike is the result of the retaining collar not in place when the hammer die, strike the anvil die with a planchet in the chamber, allowing the planchet to expand.is this correct? Now with lets say a 50% off center coin what is the Retaining collar doing.Has it malfunction or is it in place when the planchet is struck? I'm just trying to understand the difference between a Broadstrike and an offcenter. Thanks on any info

Broadstruck and off-center errors both occur because of a collar malfunction, the difference is the positioning of the strike. Broadstruck coins always have 100% of the design present and off-centers are missing some percentage of the design. Broadstruck errors tend to be rarer because the odds are that the planchet will not be centered between the dies when struck without a collar. I believe that the press used to strike that coin was capable of about 120/minute so feeding the planchet and striking the coin is very quick process. Broadstruck errors also come in two types- centered and uncentered, perfectly centered and massively oversized examples are the most desirable.

Thanks coop and biokemist
It sounds like it's the same malfunction of the collar just a diff result depending on the position of the planchet when struck.

So, is it an off-center strike or a broadstrike? All of the design seems to be there so it's a broadstrike, right? Also, is a MAD the same as an off-center strike? Thanks,
John1
Rest in Peace

A MAD is struck in the collar and an off center is struck out of the collar.

The defining feature of a broadstrike is that the collar has malfunctioned and is not present. An off-center coin can be produced with or without the collar being present. Usually the status of the collar is not mentioned on an offcenter strike.

I don't think off center coins can be caused inside the collar. Essentially the difference between off center and broadstruck are whether the entire design is present.
