Can't determine obv from rev, top from bottom, etc. Soaked in acetone couple hours, made no difference. Thanks for any ideas, suggestions. 1st pic is concave, 2nd convex, edge angles inward from pic 1 to 2. Approx 25mm, 14g. Identified - moved to Ancients forum - Sap

It could have been an ornate button.

Bronze coin of one of the Ptolemys of Egypt. The hole in the center was made when the coin was and not later damage. Possible Ptolemy III 221-204 BC or BCE as you prefer.

The reverse inscription probably reads "ΠΤΟΛΕΜÎ'ΙΟΥ Î'Î'ΣΙΛΕΩΣ". There is also a regnal date to the left or behind the eagle. Below are images of a similar coin in silver.

Is it just my imagination or does the first photo show a standing or walking eagle facing to the left? I would have thought the hole would have come later. What was the purpose of manufacturing a hole in that coin?

The question mark in a black diamond in the inscription information was supposed to be the Greek latter "B"

Jay . . thanks for the input. I wouldn't call it a hole. Is an indentation on both sides pretty much opposite. Any suggestions as to try a longer acetone soak or other ways to remove more of the crud?

I would not bother cleaning it. I don't think it will really bring out much more detail or add value. Fun coin. I hope someone here can identify which Ptolemy it is.

No-one knows with absolute certainty why the holes are present in these coins - and in many Roman Provincial coins as well - but the most accepted theory is that they were caused during the manufacture process when the blanks were prepared on some sort of lathe device.
