I'm considering an Marcus Aurelius denarius, and after viewing a few hundred examples, I have narrowed down to the following 3. I'm studying the market to get an idea of prices--all 3 are around €60. How does that price sound, and which is your favorite? I have one. Thanks for your help! 3.67gr, no RIC provided Cat: RIC 148; BMCRE 397; RSC 463; MIR 133, Rome mint 3.32gr, RIC 458. SCARCE. I don't collect ancient coins, so take my opinion only on visual appeal. I like the first one.

Don't remove it from the slab. There should be a market for slabs that show incompetence.

Coin 3 as Caesar wins on all counts - condition, portrait style, reverse type. I believe it is worth the price. Coin 1 is second and not a bad coin but not equal to #3. That leave #2 to be last. All are collectible but the question was the best use of the cash and that is #3.

Without looking at the the other responses, I would select coin three. It has the best detail and the most interesting reverse of the the three. Then I guess I would go with coin two and then coin one in that order. Coin two has a nice round flan and seems to be evenly struck. Coin one is not evenly struck as is evidenced at 5 o'clock on the obverse and 2-3 o'clock on the reverse. I can't comment on the price as I haven't looked at Marcus Aurelius coins in a while other then to say that $80 seems somewhat high for any of the three. But if I were going to take one regardless of the price, it would be coin 3. Good luck

Thanks for all your input. Among hundreds of denarii I saw, #3 stood out for those same reasons--portrait style/quality and reverse detail. And, the third coin is also slightly cheaper than the other two...I may just have to get that one.

Thank you Giano. What is the difference between the coin bearing Augustus and Caesar? I also like fact it actually says Aurelius. As Marcus Aurelius is my favorite emperor, I could easily justify spending a little extra--as a Christmas gift to myself. I also think the coin looks better than the seller's photo--I'll post new pictures when it arrives.

If coin #1 was in better condition that would be my first choice. I would go with #2.

Despite the rough shape of the flan, I like #3 from an artistic sense. Of course that is my opinion.
