I don't know much about coins and I was hoping someone might help me determine what kind of coin this is. Thanks so much. ***E-Mail Address Removed***

A US Shield nickel. Date has to be either 1866 or early 1867 because that is the only time the rays between the stars were used. The nickels were struck from 1866 through 1883, replacing the Half Dime

Jesse! Jay hit it right on the head, but as Symphonic said, we're all wondering where it came from!

Without a discernable date, I'd grade this coin AG-3. IMO, worth around $12.

This a a historic coin ... our country's first nickel type. IMO, poor condition, worth about $2.

I often leave coins like this among tip money in a restaurant or give it to junior coin club members. I've even spent similar coins; this, in hopes that some finder will be sufficiently intrigued to seek out a collector and possibly join our community.
