If nothing was added to the surface, that is serious metal deformation

Coins done in this style are sometimes referred to as "punch outs" or "pop outs". It starts with a normal coin that is then pressed onto a mold/die. I have never seen it on anything besides a 90% silver coins, clad coinage would probably be too hard. I have seen this done to Morgan dollars, Barber halves, and Kennedys but I have never seen a dime before. I would say it is $5 well spent

Nice ring but does it fit? Noticed it showed a 1917. Wonder if it was a D? All in all nice for $5.

Right in the center of the pic. just to the right and a little above the E in ONE. I think that is a D mint mark. Carl put on the strong glasses. Think the D will make it worth a little more? Maybe $6.

I have seen Morgan dollars made like that and I have a Kennedy half like that as well, I don't remember seeing a Mercury dime done this way though. This is also the first ring I have seen made out of one of these also, most of the others are pendants for a necklace

The pushed out coins were very popular in the late 1970's and were done on the Barber and Mercury dimes, Barber and Kennedy halves and the Morgan and Peace dollars. There weren't many Barber dimes done and are quite scarce and I don't recall ever seeing a Barber quarter pushed out. The Mercury dimes and Peace dollars were the most popular for the push outs way back then. Don't see any of these that often anymore. One of each would make a very interesting set. ANA LM-3175

I love the line about it being worth 6.00 as opposed to 5.00 if that is indeed a D mintmark :)

This pic came out of COINage Magazine Dated April, 1983. The article is, Numismatic Novelties, not scholarly' but sure fun, by Lee Martin. He only mentions the coin in the photo's caption, referring to it as "Pop-out or pop-thru are pieces that Carry interest." The photo looks like an 1883 Morgan.

I've been looking into coin ring making. It looks like a lot of fun. Apparently your ring is made from a rare set of dies.
