I find tons of dimes like this but never found any halfs
or even quarters like it yet. Forgot exactly why it happens
but there are a few reasons. Someone will chime in and refresh
my memory (or lack of) shortly.

If that's a clad it has had acid used on it to dissolve the copper layer,IMHO. Why someone would do that, I just don't know.

I have seen some like that. Jewlers cut the rim so they can mount it on a necklace or other piece of jewelry

Environmental damage. Under corrosive conditions, the copper corrodes away faster than the cupro-nickel clad layers.

Captainwiffo has the most accurate answer. Environmental damage caused this. It likely was exposed to something acidic, but it was likely not purposefully done. Coins sit in the ground or in car floorboards and get eaten away by moisture and whatever else happens to be in the area. Coke and other soft drinks are also very corrosive to copper based coins.

While it is possible that a purposeful acid bath could have caused this, there are far more possibilities that leave a conclusion of a purposeful bath as premature.
