Hello Everyone:
I am now starting a project of searching through 10000 Canadian pennies. My Goal is to see how many Pre-1952 cents, 2011 magnetic cents and 1999P cents I can get.

Here's the result of my first 500 coins:

Pre 1952- 0
1952-1977- 35 (Melt Value for each: $0.0247924)
1978-1979- 9 (Melt Value for each: $0.0247109)
1980-1981- 6 (Melt Value for each: $0.0213550)
1982-1996- 72 (Melt Value for each: $0.0190668)
US Cents- 33 (I don't believe it! 33/500!
2011 Magnetic Cents- ONLY 1

What is happening with the magnetic cents? Anyone know? The websites for prices aren't showing the prices. Mintage maybe? Anyone know?

Also, I had some great finds. I don't know if I was lucky or whatever, but I found more than twenty 1970s cents in MS Condition. Also found about 30 1990s cents at around MS 64, but after all, no Pre-1953 cents.

Only one 2011 NAGNETIC CENT AT THIS POINT!

As you say that you find a lot of the magnetic cents,
maybe it's because you live in the east, because it appears that there's more in the east.

I live in the east and out of all the 2011 cents I get in circulation, about 40% are magnetic. I picked up a couple rolls from the bank and saved another two rolls from my change. They are so common to me I just put them in my penny jar to be rolled and cashed in at the bank. I am wondering if perhaps I should be hoarding all I get?

Yes! Save them!

Actually, I pulled a lot of them from circulation during the month of August, but I threw them back into circulation, because I thought that there would have been more. But now, I only have ten left.

I hate to admit this but some ebay sellers are right. The Royal Canadian Mint did announce that it costs more to make the magnetic pennies, so they decided to stop making them. 2011 should be the last year of magnetic pennies, made by leftover materials. But anyway, don't listen to the ebay sellers who say that the non-magnetic ones are rare.

I did a similar exercise about a month ago, someone gave me a bucket of pennies. I don't recall how many 2011 I had I would say about 20 and only one was magnetic. Seeing this post I pull out all my change I had seven 2011 pennies, all of them were magnetic.

Have not found any 2011 Magnetic Cents out west. They must all be sticking to the big magnet out east.

Here's my update for the next 500 coins:
1952-1977- 49
1978-1979- 26
1980-1981- 28
1982-1996- 253
US CENTS- 42
2011 Magnetic- ZERO

Here is something super weird about this bundle of rolls: The FIRST, SECOND, FOURTH, FIFTH, SIXTH, SEVENTH AND NINTH rolls that I searched through all had pennies of 1992 and older. Most of them are from 1991 MS 63 and up. I found out that the mintage for that year is over a billion or something like that. I also found around thirty pennies from the 1970s that are in MS conditions. Seems to me that those rolls were packed in 1992, because even the US cents in them contained nothing later than 1992.

On most of those coins there's coal that glued up the coins. Disgusting.

It was fun following along to see what you would find in your 10,000 pennies.

I couldn't find a price in Charlton for your metal BUTTON, what do you think it's worth?

Thank you for your humor. I don't know what the metal button is worth exactly, but I am sure that it's worth over a cent, but no one would want it.

You live in West Vancouver, right?
I live in New Westminster.
(This is a note for everyone): I don't know if the banks around me will be able to get me more pennies. In CIBC, my bank, seems to be out of pennies. RBC, keeps on asking for account and said that because I already bought some Parks Canada Loonies, so I couldn't get more pennies. The place I live is a very small town, so it's always the same people in the bank, so they'll recognize me. TD Canada trust, no way. Account is a MUST!

I might post some more after CIBC gets some pennies for me, which will be after some time.

Thank You for all your replies
Merry Christmas to all on this reliable online community!

The King George looks nice, the reason for the grouping is probably due to someone turning in a little hoard.

Petersun, I do live in West Van. My first attempt to by a box of pennies took me three days. I figured hitting the TD Bank in the mall (yes, I do have an account) they'd have "tons" of change. I had to order a box of pennies and box of nickels. They asked me to call ahead if I make a withdrawl for any boxes as they can't fill my request on the spot and would take 2-3 days.

Seeing we live in the same general area, I'm interested to see how different our penny searches are. I went through 300 tonight during the hockey game.

Pre 1952 - 1 (1945 in VG at best)
1952-1977 - 26
1978-1979 - 5
1980-1981 - 11
1982-1996 - 59
US Cents - 4
2 Cent Euro - 1
2011 Magnetic Cents - 2 (out of 15)
