I have a few British copper plated steel cored Pence errors, without the copper plating, just the steel core. They are otherwise struck up as normal.

It may well be worth spray coating this specimen with acrylic laquer to preserve it. It may look reasonably grotty after a few years if you don't, depending on the storage conditions. Clean with acetone first, then thoroughly dry, before coating.

It looks like environmental damage to me.

acrylic laquer,coating.
Nooooo Wouldn't that ruin any value of the coin if it was an unplated error?

Just for fun, I coated a 1964 Kennedy half dollar, from a spray can, when I bought it from a coin dealer, way back in 1964. It STILL has the same blast white appearance with full mint lustre as when I coated it.

Haven't tried it on my British non plated steel coins, they showed some rust when I first acquired those.
