My girlfriend has talked about possibly giving me a 1917 Type I Standing Liberty quarter for Christmas. Her dad's great aunt died recently and owned a general store locally. He was given some of the coins that she had in a few jars and most of them were silver and pretty old. I asked if I could go through them and see what all there was there. They didn't mind, so after going through, most of it was just junk silver in bad condition and no key dates. Then I ran across this SLQ with amazing detail, just has some tarnish on it, it looks like. I would post some pictures, but I am up in college currently and she left it at home. Her family doesn't know much at all about coins or numismatic value, so my girlfriend said that they will probably give it to me if I take good care of it.

SCORE!

I would like to have it graded, but I just don't know who will grade a single coin and how much it is going to cost me. Right now I am really looking at ANACS, NGC, and PCGS. They all seem pretty expensive and I don't see an option for single coin grading. Just from my eye, I would say that the coin is at least AU or MS condition. It has amazing detail, but is just a little black from tarnish.

Let me know what you guys think!

They all grade single coins. However you have to have a membership in the thieves guild for NGC and PCGS. ANACS on the other hand requires no paid membership and their fees are half what you pay for the over rated guys. A simple grading for any US coin for a 15 day turn around is 19 bucks. Just go to the ANACS page and follow the submission link.

If you are strictly grading it to preserve it and keep it for your personal collection then save yourself the money and go with ANACS.

PS:

PSS: I hope no one is tired of seeing my baby that I waited 20+ years to find

if you post pictures in the grading section, CCF members can give a ballpark grading.
