Damaged 1866 Three Dollar Gold Coin

solwonders New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 01/02/2012 02:20 am Hi I need help, I have a three dollar us coin 1866 that has some damage. It looks as if it was drilled between the words and then repaired. Other than that the coin shows no wear. ( I am not a collector.) Should I try to sell it or scrap it? I don't know enough about classic US coins to answer your question intelligently, but I did move your thread to the Classic US section so the experts will see it. I will also add that pictures that show the damage might also help in determining whether the coin is beyond hope or not. enoilgam Valued Member Australia 243 Posts	Posted 01/02/2012 05:30 am The total scrap value of the coin at todays gold price is about $220, so you could probably expect to get around $200 if you scrap it. However, Three dollar gold pieces usually sell for a a significant premium above bullion value as they are quite rare. The 1866 is relatively low mintage (4,000) and retails for about $1000 in Very Fine condition. So considering that its damaged (and assuming that it is otherwise in Very Fine condition), you might be able to get $250-$350 if you were to sell it to a coin dealer.
