Some of you may remember my dime from this thread -> https://goccf.com/t/95537&whichpage=4I brought to a few coin shops and two coin shows. I have gotten offers between $200 - $500. But I met one guy that was very interested in the coin and the story. I explained to him that I don't have any attachment to the coin & what I was really looking for was to put together a type of each US coin going back as far as I could. He told me that he would rather trade a few coins for the Merc and I would probably get more value out of it that way. He said he might be able to give me a Trade dollar, Seated Liberty dollar, a Seated Half, and a 20 Cent piece all for the Merc. (all raw & ungraded) It seems that everyone wants a 1916-D Merc, but no one wants a damaged one. What advice would you all give?

Depending on the value of the coins he wants to trade and if you need those coins go ahead and trade. Then look for a better condition '16-D Merc for your collection. IMHO. John1

I'd do the trade, damaged coins are horrible when trying to resale later.

That could be a real good trade depending on the condition (and authenticity) of the coins he wants to trade. Have you seen these coins?

I haven't seen them yet. He owns a store in Media, PA (about 2hrs away from me). He has many examples of each type so I may drive to PA one day and make the trade. I just want to prepare myself with what to expect to get in return.

Just keep in mind that since he owns a store, you can bet he is going to come out on the better end of the trade. He has to in order to make a profit.
Still might not be a bad deal though if he has coins you are interested in to complete your type set.

I understand he has to make a profit. But to be honest, it seems like not many other people are interested damaged coins. I could probably take a risk and throw it on ebay, but I think I get a better deal with this guy. Or at least I hope.

Just make sure that your last question before you make your decision is: "Is that the best you can do in trade?" Sounds to me as if the dealer might have the coin already sold to one of his customers.

Why not try ebay and put a reserve on it for $500 ?

Quote:Maineman750 Why not try ebay and put a reserve on it for $500 ? I agree. Right now ebay is offering free insertion on acution fees. You will still have to pay 13% ebay and Paypal fees. So plan your hoped for profit accordingly and ask yourself how much did you pay for the coin vs. how much you think it is worth vs. how much value you can get in trade.

He just never had one with VF30 details. Quote:Why not try ebay and put a reserve on it for $500 ? This guy said he'd give me about $500 in cash or around $700 in trade. No S&H fees, no ebay or paypal fees.

I would rather do ebay and put a sell price of $750 to start and $900 buy it now. You would be coming out ahead with that deal even after the fees. With cash, you can pick up whatever you like from any dealers, round trip of 4 hours is a little too long for me to examine coins. Ask if he can email the coins he have up for trade.

Yeah, $200-500 is a rip off.

^ not a rip off just a wholesale offer. I like the ebay idea.

I didn't realize you had the coin slabbed. I only saw the pics of it raw. With that in mind, I would definitely try the ebay route first. I'd be willing to bet you get close to $1,000 or maybe even a little better, which would be well worth the time and effort to put on ebay and ship. You could put a reserve on it. If it doesn't meet the reserve, then take the trade deal. You took good pictures of it in the slab. I think you could do considerably better than $700 even considering the fees.
