*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Hi, everyone. I was wondering if my current folder is suitable for storing coins. Ir is an Ultra PRO Collectors Album for storing trading cards (the best I could get on short notice, I plan on getting a decent folder after Christmas). Is it okay for storing coins? Some pictures:

most will recommend albums not folders. And the one you pictured would be okay for short storage, but anything longer than a month perhaps, go for a coin album. Dansco, Whitman, Littleton, Lighthouse, and there are others.

Not for raw coins. Are the coins in flips? or cardboard flips?
Just order up some pages specifically for coins, buy a 3 ring binder (one of the fancy ones - padded) and install the pages.

I went to staples and got a few extra strong 3 ring binders. I have had my coins in them for 3 years. I like them and the price was right. I also put my coins in 2X2s and put them in the 2X2 sheet holders. I think it looks nice and its easy to look through.

The trouble with the soft plastics are that the plasticizers used to make them flexible are acid based and this is not good for coins long term -I know that these are all sold in dealers shops as the way to go, but I will not take the chance. I get the vario pages made in Germany for stamp albums which are acid free and use lighthouse folders which are also acid free. These are stored in large air tight containers with plenty of silica gel, and these in turn are in a large safe which is in turn in a very large steel security lock box which is in a very well insulated locked garage. I won't give specific details on the security systems, but there are more than three independent systems..,

Basically already said. Putting raw coins, just the coins and not encased, into such places may tend to scratch them since they can move. If in a 2x2 flip, much safer. If your coins are in flips, then storing them in that Album is OK for now. As long as little to no air can get to a coin, they are basically safe. Not sure how many 2x2 flips could fit into each slot there but should hold several for now. All in all, an Album made for coins is usually safer and looks much better.

Oh, another option (cheap) is to use small zip lock bags, just make sure that they are food safe, this means they will be acid free ;-)

If you watch Walmart around the start of the School years, those 3 ringed binders go on sale really cheap. And they come in several thicknesses.

I personally find bags to be better for things such as this, but as long as your careful with your storage I'm sure that binder would serve well until you find something more suitable.

Are those pockets big enough to take slabs?
