You don't hear too many people saying nice things about the Homestead design. They were calling it the Homely puck. Myself, I didn't think it was that bad. I liked it, just not my favorite.

The "Homely-Stead" design is interesting, to say the least. It's abstract in the layout of the elements almost in a armorial style like a coats of arms and such fancy trappings. You know, a very European design concept borrowed from royalty and the nobility. However, the central element, well, doesn't it look like an outhouse or privy? I have had visitors from France receive the quarter in change and muse that it's an American sense of humor to feature a lowly shed or privy on their coins. There they have coins depicting WWI or Waterloo, whereas we just have the loo. Lol.

Got my pair of Kisatchie-P today. First time since the initial 2010-Ps that one of the pucks shouldn't have passed QC. A major light brown stain of solvent or cleaning agent on the reverse, will probably tone the silver in that area, airtite or not. And a gouge on the base of Washington's bust just above the initials. Both problems could easily be seen without magnification. Gonna wedge a post-it underneath the injection molded insert. On another blog, collectors have been saying Mint's been sending out returned/defective coins to other customers, so I might've gotten an early reject from a high volume/VIP customer. The other puck is flawless, including its OGP. This bad puck has a outer sleeve that was frayed and tearing at the edges, suspect reject? Since PSFWeb has taken over distribution they could have reinstituted the practice of recycling the returns. The bottom line is always take a good look at your coins from the Mint, with the quality control issues and receiving someone's rejects.

I haven't been hearing good things about QC at the mint. Too many issues lately. It is pretty bad when they are sending out products such as yours which should have not been. I also hear a lot of the MoD sets don't have COAs. How can you ship out the products without COAs?

I was pretty surprised to get a visibly defective coin; the pucks are carefully handled prior to shipping. They might be trying to sell every Kisatchie-P they have since the total has been reduced by 7K.
As for the missing COAs on the MoD set, there just is no excuse for such sloppy work. That's a first for the Mint.

I certainly hope not, but judging from the condition of the outer sleeve, somebody had already looked at and passed on the coin, probably a big reseller, as unfit for SP70 or SP69. Terrible quality control. Returning it today and I'm putting in a small note on the underside of the injection holder as a defective returned coin, in case some other buyer is foisted with it. With such obvious defects would be discounted 20-30% off MSRP in most retail establishments.

What do you think the mint will do after this series is over? Will they continue to make a 5 oz coins? Will they be quarters again? Will there be another quarter series or do they revert back to the old quarter? Or maybe they will just make bigger versions of other coins, such as ASEs or the like. Just thinking out loud and wandering.

Well, of course we know they have the option of renewing the ATB series for a 2nd round. However I don't know if that will translate into 5 oz. numismatic pucks. Personally I hope the (5-oz numismatic) series ends. Wouldn't mind seeing more ATB Quarters though. Perhaps with a different obverse. |

It's hard to say. But one thing for sure: 4 pucks a year w/ 2 version is draining, same with the First Spouse coin, that's why both series didn't have a larger mintage than people thought when it was first launched.
