So the wife and I were at her company's holiday party over the weekend, and I was talking to one of her coworker's husbands. We usually chat every year at the party as they gripe about work... well this time the subject of coins came up. I thought to myself "this is cool! We can talk coins!"

My hopes got even brighter when he told me about the "mint state" Morgan dollars he had and how perfect and shiny they were. He had had then for years, I think he even mentioned his grandfather may have given him some of them. A real point of pride for him.

But alas my hopes were dashed when he tells me that his "secret" for keeping them "mint state" was none other than Tarn-X and how he dips them "all the time" to keep them looking nice.

At first I thought he must be joking so I was like "really?" and was waiting for the punchline. But there was no punchline to be had. I nearly fell over as he patiently explained to me "They're real silver you know. If you don't do something to protect them they'll discolor pretty easy."

Well, that line of conversation died pretty quick. I certainly didn't want to be the one to break the news to him that any value he may have once had was gone. I just didnt have the heart.

Ah well!

Right now he's posting a thread called "You Should Have Seen the Look On His Face" on his coin forum.

Well, that's pretty funny, but the funniest part is => he's been talking with your wife at work and has her convinced that cleaning all of your coins would be a wonderful Christmas morning surprise!

Hmmm, very funny indeed, but time to check again that the missus doesn't have the keys/codes for the safe! Just in case...

Luckily she knows better. I'm "moderately" lucky that way.
She doesn't "get" my hobby but she knows enough not to clean them. She prettymuch leaves everything alone, occasionally I'll get her to rollsearch with me but that's only been once or twice.

i'd like her to share it with me, but if she doesn't want to what's a guy to do? She doesn't impede me at all so I cant complain. And yes she has access to the safe...she has to considering she bought it for me.

You have a good heart my friend!

I'm afraid that with all the liquor that flows at my company dinner I wouldn't have been able to contain myself!

I read in another forum about a guy who had to explain the seller spent a couple hours in the parking lot erasing about $20,000 worth of value from his coins.

You hafta wonder what people are thinking. Don't they think a dealer can afford his own eraser?

I agree with everybody that this is horrible, but I have to point that the guy didn't exactly destroy "any value" these coins had. They are still silver and, given that silver is at $30+ these days, it's not exactly chump change. Plus, unless the Morgans were high grade or key dates to begin with, it's unlikely the value was hurt much in the first place. They may not bring the premium he might expect to get for "mint" coins, but they certainly still have substantial value.
Rest in Peace

More importantly, advise him so he doesn't do it to future acquisitions that could have value.

You should get your wife to tell him about this site ... then within a few threads, he'll discover the truth about cleaning coins, but you won't have to be the guy that told him, "directly" ...

Rest in Peace
