Am I crazy to come up with an idea that mimicks lo-jack for cars? But instead is a bullion bar that LOOKS like a silver bar (or gold), feels like it, heck it even weighs like it, but it is actually a transmitter linked with the police? I mean, I see these stories over and over again. If I was in the PM market on THAT level, and storing that much in my home, I would buy one. I would also keep hush about my PM's and even the location of the safe(s). All to to prevent me from being hog tied, doused with alcohol with my pregnant wife and 2-kids while being threatened by robbers as they shove a gun barrel down my daughters mouth. I don't have a family, but the thought of that angers me. The twisted/unfortunate part is, the robbers were on the phone with someone "guiding" them to the safe(s) located in the home! http://www.click2houston.com/news/M...-/index.htmlEdited by tripncoins 12/05/2011 7:53 pm

Quote: ...heck it even weighs like it... Getting the weight right might be technically difficult for a silver bar, but I'm afraid gold would be next to impossible. Gold is amongst the densest substances known; you'd have to hollow out quite a bit of the ingot to put in something powerful enough to break through to the police, and the stuff you'd fill it up with wouldn't be anywhere near as dense as gold. You might have to contend with a lightweight lookalike, and hope the scum don't pay too much attention how heavy the things are.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

I can't get the link to show the story. I saw a link to this story on another site and no luck. What actually happened? Is it like you describe. Really scary things are happening to coin dealers

Better solution might be to wrap all the PMs and hide the lo-jack/dye pack in the wrapper. Theives won't take the time to unwrap...probably...

By the way, that is a terrifying story. A little 14 year old girl was murdered here in IL just last month when she came home after school and walked in a robbers taking some gold coins. Makes me sick.

I have seen a thread on this Forum about fake gold bars made out of tungsten. Both metals have the same density, 19.3 g/cc.

The problem is if you replace a bunch of hollowed-out gold with lightweight GPS parts, you need something heavier than gold to make up for it. And what do you do when the battery dies? The opening can't be very obvious. $500,000 in gold is less than 300 ounces. That's a cigar box full.

I think the smarter approach would be to have something else of value the thieves would be sure to take. What about a bundle of what looks like $100 bills shrink rapped with the transmitter inside?

This is not nearly as complicated as you guys are making it out to be. Transmitters are extremely small the ones in cell phones are no bigger then a pinky nail and almost as thin and for the right price so can be a extremely small yet long lasting power source for it. Think of using a betavoltaic battery. Yes it would cost hundreds of thousands to get one, but hey we are talking about pounds of gold worth millions or billions. As for the size of the bar, it would only need to be a extra millimeter or two thick for a 100 oz bar, thats not noticeable even if side by side.
Do any of us need it because we have millions in gold laying around? No I doubt it and if you do please send me a few oz for safe keeping :).
But as for the idea it is quite simple to do. I could rig something up with a few bucks in my garage.

I hope this case is solved. The fact that it was an inside job really bothers me. I'm guessing there is a relative with a drug problem.

Relatives can be a real problem. First, you really don't want to believe they have a drug, gambling, etc problem. Then, they often have access to stuff that you wouldn't allow to, for example, the plumber or a house guest. Finally, even if caught red-handed, you don't want to prosecute.

I, and others I know have relatives who have stolen from them, they will sometimes try to blackmail you, my gfriends sister lied to her in order to get her to give her $4,000, she got away with it of course. I told her she was crazy to give her the money, of course she went to the gaming casino with it. Same girl stole her grandmothers identity and opened up some credit card accounts, to the tune of $10,000. She never went to jail, nor paid any of it back, just saw her at Thanksgiving, she can do no wrong, I call it the pass.

I often give my mom "loans" half of which she never pays back. But thats far from her putting a gun to my head and beating me with it O.O
Then again come to think of it one time I did give her my credit card and she charged a whole heck of a lot without asking :/ Yeah darn family.

Actually, it doesn't have to be a bar or coin with a transmitter in it, unless you're trying to track the thief. Old, cheap, technology is based on how electronic scales and in-ground traffic controllers work.
One part of a shelf has a sensor in it. Doesn't look any different from the rest of the shelf, but if you lift the weight off it, the resistance changes and sends a silent alarm to the police.
