Die-Chip-On-The-Wheat-Stalk?

First time I've found one of these. The coin is a 1953P. Could this be the beginning of a Retained Cud?

It is just a die chip. A Retained Cud is when the die break causes part of the die to start to break away from the die. They are much harder to find than a die chip. Here is an example:

Just to understand definitions, and I'm guessing here:

- a die chip is when the die is broken and allows a little of the planchet metal to form into the die,

- whereas a Retained Cud is a piece of, perhaps, the prior coin that broke off that the die attached to the current coin

A die chip is when a part of a devices chips away. Leaving an are un formed during the striking process. Nothing is added to the planchet, it is just not formed because of the missing area on the die. Thus the cud/chips/cracks/breaks will be raised. Every coin struck after this happens with a die will look like this chip and will get worse or may have more problems. So nothing is transfered. It is just a relief area on the die is missing. On a Cud the opposite die will lack detail because that area of the die is missing and can place pressure to fully form the opposite die.

Note the Cud on the obverse and the weak area on the reverse. Again nothing is added to the planchet from another coin, just the die is missing these devices and the area is not formed because the lack of the die material.
