Not sure if this is the right term, but look at the penny. What is the cause of this scabbing and is it worth keeping.

I think it's called blistering/bubbling. It's a plating issue, something to do with the way the mint rinses the planchets before plating. Not worth keeping unless you want to. They are very common.

Zincoln planchets are produced by an outside contractor, Jarden Zinc punches the zinc blanks and then electroplates them. I am not sure if Jarden mills the rim as well or just sends them to the Mint as blanks instead of planchets.
