Hi All
Just opened my first box of Kennedy's and started a book of which I only put the best looking coins from each year in. I found several of each year that seem to be a great condition, but I know nothing about grading yet. here is an example of one, I know the pics are blurry and the lighting is bad, still trying to figure that out. the question I have is once my book slot is full if I find more of that year that is in this shape are they worth keeping or trying to sell on e-bay, or should I just cash them back in at the bank? I found about a dozen from the 70's like this one and more from the 90's and 2000's

don't use camera flash when taking pictures, and provide a picture of the reverse too. as for keeping them its up to you. I don't know the value of halves. I would say look up the value with the estimated grade and if they are worth keeping keep them. that is really something that's up to you too. they might not be valuable but if you think they are worth keeping then you should keep them.

I agree. Remember that part of the fun is putting together a collection of the best coins you can.

thnks, here is a pic of the back without the flash. I used a flood light above the coin for lighting, but this gave it a yellow dull look? As for the value, I did look it up on a site that lists this date (P, though)around the $120 range if MS66, which I know is a very good and rare condition. but my curiosity is for any coin in general, if it is something like this that lists at $120 for MS66 but nothing lower, would it be worth keeping say a AU or low MS, or trying to sell on e-bay, even if for $5-$10 vs. taking back to the bank. the site I use is coinauctionhelp. I'm mainly curiuos as to what to keep till I can start reading up on and getting used to what to look for on coin grading. I guess I was hoping for a simple answer to what is not a simple topic, lol.

the only way its worth it with Kennedys is if its a basically perfect coin MS66 minimum but really more MS67-70, or a super rare find like a 1974-D DDO.

Kennedys just have no rare key years, besides a double die or other error. They also are not hard to find in decent unc shape. Therefore its only the truely fantasic coins that bare much over face value.

I'd recommend saving any Kennedy halves that you come across dated 1970 or earlier, as these coins have 40% silver content in them and thus are worth saving. Other than that, most coins with wear/marks from circulation on them won't be worth much over face value (unless you run across a proof coin with an "S" mintmark, but you aren't likely to see many of those).

The key with modern releases is conditional rarities. Kennedy half dollars for most dates are common at grades of MS-65 and below. These grades are fine if you are building an everymans' set they are perfectly fine- but if you are putting together investment grade Kennedy half dollars you will need MS66-MS67 coins. I strongly recommend Whitman's Franklin and Kennedy half dollar text- it's a great primer to both series.

I have a nearly complete Kennedy set that is in a Dansco folder. I've cherry picked the best pieces to have graded by PCGS- I have had the following come back:

1998-D MS-67
1983-P MS-65
1982-D MS-63
2011-D MS-67

... and I thought these were the best I had.

The yellow color is caused by incandescent lighting. Our brains correct for it and we don't see the yellow but the camera does. If your camera has a "white balance" adjustment, set it for incandescent (sometimes an icon of a light bulb) and the color should be correct.

That is a tough one to find in that condition. What I am looking for is one with a great strike and good detail. The 83's and 84's and even 85's, 86's were weak in detail.
