I'm a newbie going through a stash of older coins that I'd forgotten about, nothing particularly collectible, mostly quarters, some half-dollars, from the silver era, 1940s-1960s. But I was emptying out a roll of half-dollars, mostly Kennedys, and suddenly saw something totally different: 1938!
I'd never seen one before. I don't have a coin book, but when I looked online, I figured it's something called a Capped Bust. Is it worth anything substantially more than the Liberties, Franklins and Kennedys? It's not in good condition, though. Everything is legible, but hardly any relief left and none of the ridging around the rim. And, no, sorry, I'm not able to post a picture.
(By the way, I'm still looking unsuccessfully for a recommended vendor or local club in New York City.)

Um, yes, it's worth a bit more than your average Franklin. [:)
If you can find one for sale anywhere, in any condition, for less than about $40, let me know.

First, to the Forum! Second, (I know you said you can't post pictures), maybe you could scan both sides of the coin and upload those? We could then give you a much better idea of the condition of the coin and, from that, it's approximate value. This way if you decide to sell it, you will know what it's worth and won't get taken.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the find! Like Moe said, we'd love to see a scan if that's possible. That way you'll know exactly what you have, and more importantly, what it's worth. Again, congratulations!

A cool coin to come across- I'm sure you meant 1838 and not 1938 though!

Yes, of course I meant 1838! Pardon my typing. At least I got it right in the title line.
Sorry, I'm very low-tech, and haven't any capacity for pictures, scanning, uploading, any of that. Maybe if I find a coin worth six figures, I'll buy all that 21st-century kind of stuff.
As I said, the coin is in pretty poor condition, with hardly any relief left at all.
So, you think I should expect $40? Or more? I'm not having much luck with coin dealers, so I figure I'll try experimenting with Craigslist - unless I find a coin club here.

Here are the listed Fair Market Values from Numismedia.com 1838 FMV Prices (Good-MS60) G4 $60 VG8 74 F12 86 VF20 144 XF40 240 AU50 390 AU53 420 AU55 540 AU58 810 MS60 1,140 By saying that your coin is in "pretty poor condition", it would probably be less than G4. But you may be selling yourself short without...
