What exactly do you mean by "raised areas?" 1878-S Morgans had a relatively low per-die mintage (9.7 million produced and 192 dies made), so strikes were generally excellent and die cracks/damage relatively rare by comparison to other mintages.

I really do not think this is post mint damage. Does anyone have an idea of wht these are caused from?

what did ANACS grade it? if you don't mind me asking. It kinda looks like a VAM-36 which is a very scarce coin if it is that particular VAM but I can't be 100% sure from those pictures

MS 61, do you think that is an accurate grade? What markers should I look for. And with all the knowledge I have learned from reading your responses please feel free to ask me anything. Well almost

So does anyone have an idea of what these "raised areas" are caused from? Do I have something extra special? I know it is special just because its a Morgan but you know what I mean.

the VAM-36 has the point broken off the 4th star to the right of the date (as yours does< and it has polishing lines just about ewverywhere especially in the eagles wings close to the body

Thank you Bryan, there definitely is alot of polishing lines on the reverse. I'm still lost about the raised spots. Does anyone else see them? Have you ever seen these on any other morgan or other coin. I am still convinced that it is not post mint.

there should be 2 raised dots inside the ear also if its a VAM-36. Here is the picture from the book of the VAM-36

Thanks Bryan definitely is a VAM-36. What kind of premium does this carry. I am so happy I do not have to sell any of my Morgans or any of my other favorite coins. Well I guess this not a VAM-36.

Most likely die chips, but I would check to see the VAM on this one. It may be a better variety.

I seen on VAMworld tey will attribute coins for a $5 fee, which doesn't seem bad. I have not been able to attribute, I'm still pretty green. Is sending it in something I should do?
