I save pre 60s but not all of them. Take a look at the nickel searching thread, just search "the goal" and click on the 25,000 nickels thread

Some folks have a hard time finding '09's so you may want to keep them. I have plenty of '09-D nickels but only a couple of '09-P.
I generally keep anything 1960 or earlier as well, again, depending on condition. I keep anything foreign, proofs and errors. I also look for any coins that will upgrade my folder.
As rachums107 said, that 25,000 nickels thread has lots of info but it may take you hours to read through it. :)

Ya haha I started reading but it was taking forever lol. I am halfway through the box and so far am seeing a TON of 2006 and 2007. Haven't seen a single 2009 yet. I have only run into about 12 pre 1960 so far. I have found 2 1940s and 1 1939, both are in pretty bad condition. Everything I have found pre 1970 so far has ben in pretty bad shape for the most part.

Sounds about par for the course, Casutherland. Cool that you found something in the 30's! Typical box is lots of 2006-2008, 2010-2011 in really nice shape. I've collected a tube of good specimens of each of the '04 & '05 varieties and MMs (Westward Journey) just because I think they're cool. Then the hit rate drops off considerably as you go back earlier than 2000... In 3 boxes I've found just two War Nickels and they've been pretty ugly. You'll probably run across a lot of '64 and '64Ds as well. Mostly due to the fact that there were a billion+ of each made. You'll be excited at your first few and then quickly tire of seeing so many when you really want to see something in the 1940s. :) Flip side is you can find some that are in really good shape for being nearly 50 years old. I was able to complete 1962-2011 (minus a 2009P and a 2011P) with one box of nickels. 1938-1961 is going to take a long, LONG time using coins from circulation only, but that's my goal! I'll also be putting an separate album together of UNC and proofs which I will of course have to purchase. Good luck and have fun!

Hey Celtic, ya I don't plan on finishing the whole album in one box lol, but I am going to go one box at a time...Just can't afford to toss up anymore than 100 dollars at a time lol. Anyway, I am wish regions..do you know if they have coin counting machines because I don't know really what to do about turning the box full of nickel rejects back in lol? Also, should I be looking for any variations or special things, and what all do you think should be keepers?

Maybe you'll notice the same thing I have and find more than a couple MS '39s. I also keep my pre-60s seperated just for the heck of it. I also look for Cuds and severely rotated or misaligned dies. Good luck hunting!

Casutherland, the fun thing with roll searching is that if you get on a good cycle, you really aren't spending much money.
Think of it this way...
o you invest in a $100 box of nickels. Okay, you're out $100. That kinda sucks. o you keep say, $5 of that first box to start to fill your set, and you keep all the oldies (and 5% is an impossibly good hit rate unless it's the first box :) . o that means you turn back $95 into the bank which will get credited to your account in 3 or 4 days. o get another $100 box after you deal with the snide clerk who doesn't want to take your change. o wash, rinse, repeat. o That means you're only down $195 at any time, and you'll get most of it back. o And once you have that bit tied up in the hobby and you don't "need" it, well...that's just gravy.
After your 3rd box, you will be returning 99% of the nickels to the bank, so it's really your time that is the big factor at that point, because you won't be spending any money on the nickels except on gas to transport them to/from the bank.
So ask yourself, "How much fun do I have breaking rolls looking for a crappy 38?" If the answer is "a crapload" then you're good.
Have fun!

Hey Celtic, well so far I have a lot more 64s, and maybe a few 50s and like 1 more 40 so far. Also I just got a BU 2009 D, kind of funny since I am on the east coast here in TN. Anyway, I have about 15 more rolls left to go or so..I have gotten maybe about 10 2010s and like 5 2008, but about 250 of 2006 and 2007 lol. That seems kind of odd to me. Oh and I haven't gotten a single 2011 nickel yet; thinking maybe that this box has been in regions vault before 2011?

I just checked my records and I had exactly 30 (out of 65) holes filled in my 38-61 folder after the first 2 boxes. I got to 50/65 within just several more. Then I started creeping....adding 1 or maybe 2 per box.
I still have yet to find the 39D, 43D, and 50D, but I found my 39S last box after a drought of about 5 boxes with nothing new. I think it was the 45D that came in 5th place. I got somewhat lucky and found my 38D and 38S fairly early on, but those two are usually really tough.
I live close to SF and the S-minted nickels are still more common around here today than the rest of the country. I had no trouble with them, but I've read that some of the low-mintage S-minted ones like the 49-S or 46-S can be tough out east. In comparison, it actually took me a long time to find a 58-P. It's low mintage, but I was still baffled that a more recent one like that took me so long. I think I got it around hole filled number 54 or so.

Just finished up searching my 2nd box of nickels and ended up not getting too much..No buffalos, no War Nickels, probably 10-15 pre 1960 nickels and 1 2009 D. Hopefully my next box provides more. My first box that I searched this past summer had 3 War Nickels..ah well! You win some and you lose some! Does anyone know if string and sons has better returns than brinks? Both boxes that I have gotten so far have been brinks

The last strings box I got had ~20 pre-60's, one silver war, and a dateless buffalo. About the same as my average Brinks box.

I agree with keeping any 2009's you find. I've found only one after many many rolls. I also keep any pre 1960's.
