I just had my best buy ever! I have a weakness for Vicky 50 cents in AU: http://www.ebay.com/itm/27085873989....m1439.l2649So I chased down this darkly toned beauty, even though I already have two 1872 50 cents in AU. I thought...maybe I'll clean it up...put it in a different holder. Or maybe I'll turn out ok. Turns out, its a 1872 50c A/V ! Going by the ICCS population report, it's the 2nd highest ever graded! Only one exists in mint state, in MS62, and ICCS hasn't graded any in AU! Now I know some of you will think "NGC AU55" = "ICCS G4"...but I dont care. Lots of nice lustre on this, with original toning and essentially no wear. I'm leaving it in its NGC holder. A $900 coin turns out to be $18,000 (1872 A/V 50c AU55 Trends)...I think that's a find that Zonad and Glenn would be very proud of :). Zonad, I think I've finally gotten over your find of a 1872 A/V in VF (scratch) for $50 :)... Heck..this find is close enough to the Belzberg find of a 1906 25c small crown in AU55, where he paid the large crown price. This has made my year! Edited by canadian-varieties 12/08/2011 5:15 pm

WOW, awesome buy Danlos, I'm jealous! Best grade I'll give you on it is an EF-40, however, being an A/V with a trend value over $5K, you made a sweet killing on this one. If and when you are interested in selling, my cheque book is ready and waiting! Glenn

Thanks Glenn...this one will stay in my collection, with the 1894 50c EF, and 1899 50c EF. I have a AU 1870 no LCW that's scratched up pretty bad, but still lovely to me.
I find the Victoria 50 cents irresistable and I think I'll try to build a full set in EF or AU. They're very rare in EF+, cleaned or not...and I think extremely undervalued.
Then I'll probably move onto the dimes :)

I will give you this what a great find! This time you win on US grading and expertising ignorance! They should stick to Morgan dollars! NICE HIT Danlos

"I find the Victoria 50 cents irresistible and I think I'll try to build a full set in EF or AU. They're very rare in EF+, cleaned or not...and I think extremely undervalued." Danlos, you and I are definitely on the same page when it comes to Vicky halves. I consider myself a Vicky junky of all 5 Canadian denominations and hunt them like there is no tomorrow. For the life of me I can't understand why there are not more Collectors that think like us. Lately I find that many are involved in collecting the modern R.C.M./N.C.L.T. coinage rather than the classics. Well, perhaps better that way, it makes less competition for us. Glenn

Very nice, I'm proud of you and very jealous. The 50 cent a/v is common as dirt until you move up the scale. I can't remember looking at that one, it is a fantastic find.

It isn't within everyone's means to collect those Vickies. If it was you guy's would be paying way more than you are.

Yes Littlemoney, I hear ya! That's why I live by John Pittman's motto: "collect the scarce coins that no one else cares about!" Glenn

Unreal to get a A/V thinking your buying a nice grade plain 1872. Congratulations!Canadian halves and especially vicky's have always been my favorite. They are the most elusive Canadian coinage there is especially in high grade. I have a 1872 A/V in F12 that is original, and is a favorite piece in my collection. I bought the coin in 1980 from a very reputable coin dealer for $110.00. Looking back it turns out to be one of my better buys. You also made a nice score on that vicky from the US treasury safety deposit box. You have had a good week.
