Thoughts-On-The-2007-Legacy-Set-And-The-Series-In-General...

So I bought this fella on ebay. Cost me $81. I figure the fair market value of the two commemorative coins to be about $70, making the remaining pieces (a clad proof set and the first four president dollars) a decent value at $11.

I can see why the Legacy Sets were short lived. This has all of the look and design of a premium product, but the mint, apparently conscious of cost, decided not to include their premium silver proof set and instead went the clad route. I think that this ultimately affected sales.

Had the mint gone this route:

Base Tier: Clad Proofs

Middle Tier: Silver Proofs

Premium Tier: Legacy: Silver Proof Set + Silver Commemoratives

then I think the Legacy series would have been much, much more popular and would probably be the preferred product for the hardcore proofers.

To my tastes, I think the 2007 set is the most attractive one of the three. I do like the proof coinage from this series more than the 2005 and 2006 proofs- though I can see the appeal of the Marine Corps coin and the San Francisco Mint proofs from prior releases. I also like the graphics on the box, and the build of the box (the proof lenses fit a little snug to my tastes, but it is secure and the OGP is substantial.

I know there has been some discussion in threads on the board a few years ago about the value and desirability of the sets. That was back when these things were selling at a significant premium.

I think the prices have come down quite a bit that I feel it can be a good buy if you keep a sharp eye on ebay. If nothing else, it's a chance to get silver commemorative coins near fair market value with a proof set thrown in at a slight discount and the best OGP I've ever seen.

What really killed this series was the price. The mint put far too much of a premium on the packaging, especially in 2008, the last year. This set cost way too much more than the individual parts to get people buying it in numbers. Silver proofs would have been nice but without a price that was a lot closer to the sum of the individual parts, it was doomed. The 2008 set was almost as much as 2006 & 2007 but only had one silver dollar.

Thats a good price. I think they were originally $125 weren't they? I missed out on the first set and bought the next two. But the price was killer on that last set. I can't imagine that the packaging cost them that much. Especially since silver was cheaper then, they could have easily slipped silver coins in instead of clad.
