When finals are over...4 days!
I am going to buy tons of pennies from the bank to search. I keep all pre 1982 and weigh the 1982 to determine if copper. What else should I look for as in key dates etc... Asking this as I just found out about the WAM.

thanks

Wow, you are a newbie if you don't know what a RedBook is. This is correctly called "A Guide Book of United States coins". Since the book cover is always red, it is popularly called the RedBook. This book is published every year. It is available in any book store or online. Another good book with details on varieties is "Strike it Rich With Pocket Change". There is a lot of information on Lincoln Memorial Cents in this book. But after you read it, you might spend too much time looking at every penny and it will take much longer to search them. Good luck.

If I was you LEft! I would sort into a few jars/containers. First I would go with a wheat/Indian head penny jar. Second a jar for pre 82 for copper( without the LWC) and then a general jar. In Then you can go through each one on your own time to see if you have any goodies. I would go through the General jar first. This is the jar you want to free up and put back out there do do it again. Here you will be looking for Double dies, WAM, CAM, oh lets see( Grab one of the books for LMC Lincoln memorial cents ( and hunt through jar one), Then on to jar 2 doing the same but knowing they are copper and so on until your turn into the Wheaties/ Maybe Indian head if your lucky!

I hope this helps. This is my method.

I also keep all pennys that are brillant uncirculated (bu),that is all coins that look like a brand new penny.
I found a beautiful BU 1974 penny last night.
I assume the older BU's have been setting in jars/etc for years.
Good Hunting!

Enough good advice here already. All I have to add is regarding the 1982 cents. You don't really need to weigh them, you can just flip them up in the air with your fingernail. The copper ones make a much different sound than the zinc ones. The copper ones make a ding that sounds like money, and the zinc ones sound like *dud thump* nothing. Try it on a few where you already have weighed them and you'll be able to tell the difference easily.
