Since my coin collecting hobby (read addiction) is a moving target, I'm looking to rob Peter to pay Paul and need your estimates as to value for this set of Washingtons. It's a color matched (bright white) BU set from 1932 through 1998 with the later proofs and need advice as to worth. All the keys are included in the "BU" category. It's housed in a Dansco 8140. Here's a sample photo (sorry for the glare)....

Nice set PG. Mine was mostly plucked from circulation and has been forgotten after all the silver was acquired. I'm sure many of yours will go for melt but I suggest you break it up and get a better value by selling at least the keys separately.

Wow that's a beauty of a set, especially having the keys at BU! Some of the other dates have condition rarities, so I'd sell the 32D/S separately for sure because of their value. And maybe 2-5 other BU coins in the 1930s that have high value in BU. 36-D comes to mind as a tough date in BU. The rest of the set should go for way above melt value.
I just cannot estimate it well because the 32D/S have very different values in AU58/MS60 vs MS64/65.

I'm actually going to give you a number and say $3500 for the set is what you can get. I'm making an educated guess which is heavily influenced by the individual grades of the key dates from the 30's....most notably 32DS and 36D. I think that number is more likely to actually be higher than lower...I'm being somewhat conservative.
That's my estimate for selling as a whole. If you wanted to sell for maximum profit and don't mind doing the work, I'd do this...
I would actually sell every single silver quarter individually all the way up to 1964. If you can take good pics, 90% of them will do just fine in an auction. I would also sell the 82PD and 83PD separately. Then I'd sell the rest of the set as a set. Your combined take should easily eclipse $4000, it would just take many hours of work.

I like the way you think hesgut.. It's a shame to break it up since the coins really do match, but I understand the economics involved.... PG

hesgut is right on, I don't know if I'd sell all of the silver common dates individually, it's going to depend on what would make it worth it. I suspect you might be able to make somewhere around $4 or so a coin above melt for the later dates. Pre 54 condition rarities start to make it more worth it (at least to me). I'd almost be tempted to take at least one stab at selling it as a set. For me personally if I could sell the set for 3500 or individually at 4000 I'd sell it as a set. The idea of dealing with 50+ auctions vs 1 is really appealing. That's just me though.

I have been looking for the later silver years in BU and believe me when I say they go for way over melt. I try and pick some up for $10-$15 for common dates in low BU and usually get out bid. Demand is high! Split them up, list them with great photos, $.99 auctions, and sit back and have some fun seeing them go! You'll do great! I want your set BAD and so do many others! Good Luck!

To maximize your profits. You might consider having the possibly higher value coins graded. BIG difference between MS64 to MS65.
I doubt I would sell any of the keys without having them slabbed.

It's a shame you have to let this set go. It appears to be a beautiful matched set. I would sell pre 1941 individually at the very least. Above that may be worth your while (time) to list as a short set.
I know I am not alone in wondering what "Paul" is.

Kurt next time you're interested in buying later date bu washingtons send me a pm, I've got a set from 56 on (18 in all) that I'd love to get rid of.
OP I'm in aggreeance with just about everybody. It seems like a super shame to break such a stellar set.
I also agree with getting the keys graded. Will more than pay for itself if you sell them individually

Good question Dave. "Paul" is Modern Low Mintage Commemorative Dollars as an investment. Just bought a complete set (8) of the Atlanta Olympic UNC's a couple of hours ago. That gets me close to three complete sets. Looking down the road a bit, I only see good things for these coins as far as appreciation goes. They're definitely not as volatile as bullion and I'm all about feeling warm and fuzzy.
