Is there any point in keeping a 1946 Jefferson nickel in G4 condition or is is just worth five cents?

I keep just about every nickel pre-1960. Don't run across them that often so they don't take up much room.

If it has a D look for D over inverted D and if it has an S look for a hockey stick die break on Jefferson's ponytail. That is a good doubled die obverse and it is hard to find either. Regular 1946 are pretty common but I too have a hard time letting them free.

To keep my collection smaller, I have decided to only keep 1939-1961 nickels with mintages of less than 100 million. 1939 Nickels are my only exception to this rule, and of course any very nice specimans.

But, to each his own. We all enjoy different aspects of this hobby.

Well, there may be a point in keeping a G-4 1946 nickel, especially if you don't have another one. Based off my experience roll hunting, there are about 2 or 3 of these per box of 2000 nickels, so they are fairly uncommon these days.

To the other question, yes, in that shape, its only worth 5 cents.

After searching 42 boxes, I have found enough of them. So I through them back unless they are particularly nice. I would advise new nickel searchers to not save every pre60 they find because you will eventually have more than you can keep. They arent worth anything more really than 5cents.

Really, they're just older coins.

I just started putting pre-60's aside for my 2 step daughters to help build sets. I found my first 1950 P in 100.00 worth the rolls. I got excited and thought and hoped before I turned it over for a WILD 50-D! Nope, the search goes on.

I too put aside pre 60s, just because they're old and it only put my back 5 cents

Being a legimate variety, I save them This is FS 031.5
I believe the hockey stick is on the "S" mint.

I am surprised how easy it is to find pre 1960's nickels.
Out of approx 100 nickels I searched I found 5 including a 1941 in ef with mint luster.

I tend to keep any nickel pre 1960 myself, but if it's G4 then it's worth face value only... unless of course it's one of the varieties described above. As one of the above posters already stated, I say to each their own when it comes to coins like this.
