Bought this large cent for a few bucks recently. Wanted to show it off and see what you thought. Are there variations on these large cents?

I like your coin.
I have yet to purchase a US Large Cent. I have a few canadian large pennies and a bunch of british large pennies but that is it.
Thanks for sharing the picture, unfortunately I don't have anything else to share with you. I haven't really looked into these coins yet
but your post makes me want to

This is the year of the California gold rush. Who knows, this coin could've been at Sutter's Mill!

There are typically many varieties for each year in the later date large cents. While yours has sharp detail, it looks like it may have been dug or else suffered environmental damage. That said, I'll be happy to look half that good if I can make it to age 160!

I agree. Looks like a ground find. That said, I'd give it high end AU Details. Nice find!

I believe a dug coin as well, and a beauty--I love dug coins.
I Was lucky enough to dig (using a metal Detector) an 1851 Large cent on a Civil War battlefield, but it was in poor condition compared to yours.

Yes they do have variations (Varieties) but they are often rather subtle and the corrosion this piece has suffered could make attribution impossible. The identifying features are often small and faint and often do not show up even with good photos of problem free high grade coins.

It was a dug coin. It was treated with Verdicare to clean it up, but very very lightly. Thanks for the look! What are peoples thoughts on treating dug coins with verdicare? We've found a little bit of success, especially taking crap coins and making them look like something we would want in our collection. I can post a few more if there is interest
