My mom passed away a few years ago and left me 63 of of these silver dollars. She and my step dad ran the Tonopah Club (TC), in Tonopah Nevada, in the mid 1960s. I was in high school. The TC was a small casino, restaurant, bar and cocktail lounge. The time frame is a little foggy but in 1964 my dad sent me to the bank for a bag ($1000) of silver dollars. I got to go through the silver dollars as long as he got the CCs. I was a little disappointed when the silver dollars in the bag were all the same. That was the last bag of silver we ever got from the bank. A few pics from my new camera. Nikon coolpix L120.

Great story Larry. The last time I was in Tonopah was around 1973 and the real silver dollars were gone for the slots. Ah, if the kids today (numismatists anyway) could go back to the late 50's and early 60's and see the silver going into those one-armed bandits ...

I would love to have seen and experienced it. I don't comprehend my roommates and people that spend silver quarters and dimes As for my roomies now since they have meet me they don't get spent anymore, but still.

Love the story! Seems like you have some excellent coins there.
And I know exactly what you mean, brenpickle. It pains me to see my roommates spending their silver change as well, without a second thought. They've learned their lesson though! Now, I can't even tell you how many times I've come home to a pile of change on my desk, waiting to be sifted through.

Good to hear from one of my fellow Casino brats! My Grandpa owned the Silver Spur in CC. We lived in Fallon when it was just about a town of 5000 or so.
I don't know about Tonopah, but we still saw Silver Dollars up through the 70s and very early 80s. Though by that time they were definitely a rare item. The point being that we were still finding them in the counting room even then.
I would say that they went from being common around 70 to 72. I don't know when we dumped our last bag of Silver dollars, but it was probably in the mid 70s. Gramps had kept a few he wanted to save and they still exist to this day.
Great story!

I grew up in Las Vegas in the 50s with a short time in Reno, 53 to 56.
A that time there were only 50,000 people in the whole state.
The mob was in charge and the air was clean.
The Strip, Las Vegas Blvd, cost $100 a frontage foot.
I saw the world premiere of the Shaggy Dog at the Stardust Drive In, in 1962, or there abouts. The Drive In was right behind the Stardust Hotel. Never thought I would get to tell anyone about that.
Who would have guessed.

It's probably no different now with, for example, the copper pennies, or the 2009 nickels, or the ASE's, or the commems, etc.
