Greetings All,
I was just about to purchase this coin, an MS 1914-s Buffalo, when I saw that the mint mark was just an irregular block/blob of metal. I had the dealer take pictures of this coin for me. He is an honest dealer. But I need your help and opinions as to what you think.

Is this coin...Mint mark genuine or counterfeit?

look at the rim beneath the mintmark. One common method of forging mintmarks on buffalos involved drilling into the rim there. See if there are signs of repair. I agree the MM doesn't seem to match the condition of the coin. Did your dealer offer any comments on it?

The S mintmark on Buffalo nickels is generally well formed. This one does look suspicious. It is possible I suppose the die was partially filled or damaged which produced the malformed S. If so the coin could be legit. This date is fairly easy to find in mint state so why not look for one without this suspicious and unattractive feature?

No specks. The dealer is selling off his fathers collection. I am trying to cherry-pick his choicer stuff. He doesn't know coins at all. And I do not collect modern series like Buffalo's. The 14-s in mint state is a better than average scarce coin in this series. So I was entertaining the notion of acquiring one. Thanks for your inputs. I will pass on this 'opportunity'?
