inspired by the thread buy of the week and a purchase I made last week, I thought it might be fun to describe how you made your last bargain.
It can be a great find in a junk box for small money. A rare coin you found in a lot you bought on ebay and which is worth more than you paid the whole lot.
A great coin on ebay where no-one else is bidding against you, ...

I'm always hunting lists for high quality french coins at a reasonable price.
So a couple of weeks ago I found several interesting coins on a professional trader's list.
One of them was a 5 Centimes 1896, KM821.1 in vz-st which should correspond to AU.
Disappointment: it was cleaned and without that problem only a small XF.
Then I realized that it had the torch mark instead of the fasces generally represented on that year. This changes he value from more or less 5 euro to over 200.

Last couple of good buys:
I had been searching for a Flying Eagle 1858/7 (over date) for several years, of course cherry-picking the variety.
Finally I found one, then two more, over the course of three months.
Now I have three of them, a Fine, a VF and an XF. All slabbed by ANACS.

Yes, a few.

This is one of them:

Bargain-Of-The-Week

Not many would bother to care with cleaned coins and even worse, overstruck coins. Fortunately for me, luck was with me and this coin has something very unusual, that is it has three different years on it! 1759 2kopeks over 1755 MMD 1 kopek over 1727 5 kopeks. Such novelity rarely appear - next time do try to find a similar coin to this - it is very difficult.

This is another one:

Holed, damaged etc and you wouldn't care right? Well I didn't really care but it's a difficult coin to find for a type set. Cost? Just around bullion value. (yea right, seems like a joke)

Now this is a more unusual coin that involves three different years! (Makes you wonder why right?)
Bargain-Of-The-Week

Firstly, the original year of this commemorative coin is supposed to be in 1985. In 1985, proper coins were struck and later in 1988, restriked coins appeared. For some bizarre reasons, this coin was appearently muled with a 1983 die and with the edge, 1988 N(ovodel). Cost? Just 10USD which what most people would pay for proof Soviet coins these days. This coin was catalogued back in 1993 in a catalogue with at least 200USD. I have never seen this coin anywhere else, so who knows how much this can be worth today.

TreasHunt, it's a Russian polupoltinnik, or rather 1/4 ruble or 25 kopeks if you like. It's quite difficult to find in any conditions. Ther other hard to find denomination is the half ruble,

Bargain-Of-The-Week

In fact, I don't believe I have seen either of them on ebay and for several months on a Russian coin auction site.
