I have a few 1943 cents that look like impaired proofs. they where in a old bin my dealer let me go though. I have read that there where no proof created that year. so why would a coin look like it was a proof. also why are people selling proof 1943 coins on ebay?

Plated coins?

Thanks.

You are right that no proof cents were minted in 1943. The ones you see for sale on ebay are either due to ignorance on the part of the seller or intentional deception.

The steel cents of 1943 are very prone to rust and corrosion, and are frequently seen plated, as you have guessed. A freshly replated steel cent can have 'mirror-like' surfaces and appear to be a proof.

Any 1943 that has a proof-like shine has almost certainly been reprocessed(replated). There were no proofs minted that year and even if they had been minted, they would not have a Denver mintmark like that ridiculous ebay auction Look at the edge of the coin- if you do not see raw steel, then it has been replated.

Rare bold mint type! Much rarer than the regular proof.

with all of the responses above. Definitely a replated steel cent. No proof there!

I ran into the replated thing on ebay before I knew better. What I've found is that in hand it is very easy to tell the difference, but on ebay it can be very difficult simply because of how photography can affect the look of a coin. I was all set to bite the bullet and pay $20 or more for a slabbed MS coin on ebay until I saw Coop selling one here for much less. I knew he had a great reputation so I trusted it would be the real deal and it was.

Replated 43's are obvious, just look for the mirrored surfaces and odd imperfections....especially around the devices. The real ones have regular luster, just like other Lincolns from the 40's.
