Okay I'm completely new to collecting coins and I realize that cleaning coins is not a good thing to do. But I have a dime and a Wheat penny that I cant even tell what the date is on it. The dime isn't to bad but the penny is horrible. You cant make anything off the front side not even Lincolns face, on the back it is a little better that is how I know its a Wheat cent. My question is should I clean them with something or let them be? I am curious to know the dates of the coins. And if I do clean them what would I use? I ran across an article that said getting the coin wet then dipping it in baking soda then using a toothbrush would clean it without scrating but I have no idea. Thanks for all your help!

Hi Fletch

Welcome to the forum !!

If the Wheat cent is so corroded on the obverse as to obscure Lincolns bust there is no cleaning that will help the coin.

In most cases cleaning will negatively affect the value of the coin,, and when cleaning is called for on a valuable coin it is best left to the experts.

For the most part, it is best not to clean your coins. However, there are exceptions to this rule. If you can post pics of the coins (both sides) we will better be able to advise you.
Rest in Peace

I would think you would want to try and clean the Lincoln Cent.

After all, what's the point of having it if you don't know the date and mint mark?

You might want to look at the back before trying to clean it....if you see V.D.B on the bottom, you may want to take it to someone. Pics would be great.

Welcome Fletch, Your odds of having a very rare date are slim, so cleaning the coin probably will not affect the value.

Hi Fletch, and welcome to the CC Forum. If you are able to upload some photographs of the coins in question, it would help enormously. Once one of the experts on this forum can get a clear look at your coins, I'm sure that they will share some wonderful advice regarding what to do with the coins.
