Hello again everyone. I found this today going through my mothers spare change and wondered if it was the 1970 S small date or large date? The date looks almost right but the weak Liberty and In God We Trust I'm not sure about. Any assistance would be great. Thanks.

It's large date - and appears to be badly polished.

Thanks for your response Coppercoins. I knew that it was too good to be true to just find a 1970S small date in change. Oh well, I'll keep searching.

I found one in circulation. Only took 25 years and 1.2 million coins to find it.

I do know that it is still possible but I think that by the time that they reach this side of the border that they have been throughly searched and any keepers were taken out of circulation by fellow collectors.
How long did it take you to find it John1? I laughed at coppercoins response as it will probably be the case with most of the scarce dates. I guess that if they were that easy to find then they wouldn't be rare right?

As always, I really appreciate both of you sharing your knowledge and experience with me in an area in which I am still learning the ropes and there is so much to learn and remember what key dates and semi key dates to look for so thank you both again and have a great day.

You would be very surprised to find out how many cents have NOT been searched by anyone who knows what they are doing. They are still out there, but I have found FAR more 1970S small date cents way too cheap at coin shows. I have nearly a full roll of uncirculated pieces that I found for under a dollar each. I also have about a dozen small date proof sets that I bought for under $10 each.

Wow, coppercoins, you really lucked out or just knew where to search. ;) John1, that's a long time to search but the good thing is that there are so many other dates, errors, and different varieties for other years, and denominations that you would never get too discouraged in your searching and you would always find something. I was fooled by the date on the coin above but didn't know about the sharply curved 9 towards the 7. I guess that it pays to do some homework on these things or have a handy resource to look to.
