a friend of mine has this 3 dollar gold piece and was wondering how it might grade and if it is authentic. Pictures not the best but let me know what you think

Some genuine 1857 G$3 pieces had the "I" issue. This piece looks polished and would not grade problem-free. Details look close to AU.

It needs to be authenticated but my gut feeling is it's genuine.

It looks okay, I'd send it to ANACS as it's cleaned for sure, not going higher than a Details grade of XF-45. No sense in wasting money grading on a comon date $3.00 (as if $3.00 gold pieces are common).

Authentication is probably called for. No worse than EF45 Details, and still worth north of $500 at that. The last two XF Details coins sold at Heritage went for $690 and $747.50; this one has had a harsher cleaning than either of those.

I am also thinking EF/AU details/cleaned. My feeling is that this is genuine but since the surfaces do not look original it is a bit harder to tell.

It looks whizzed to me(note the unnatural cartwheel look on the reverse). The bubbly look on some of the devices bother me too, but I can't point to an "AHA" diagnostic that proves it's counterfeit, so it's probably worth submitting. Any chance you could get some bigger pics? Not that yours are small, but it's little things can make or break it. The denticles look fine, and those can be a dead giveaway. I used to own a counterfeit(inadvertently) $3 gold from 1855, and since $3 gold is THE most counterfeited US gold coin, I am a skeptic...:-)

Like Trade dollars, genuine 3-dollar coins are less common than counterfeits. I bought my one and only 3-dollar piece as a raw coin over 12 years ago and it was thankfully later authenticated by PCGS. I don't think I'd risk buying a raw example now, unless it came with an ironclad guarantee.

This 1857 seems to have rather blunt details (note the lower hair curls and the corn ears) that could be the result of polishing. It's definitely a "problem" coin, apart from my general concern about authenticity. If your friend wants confirmation the coin should take a trip to ANACS. Even with problems it would be worth more IMO if encapsulated in an ANACS details slab.
