I bought this on ebay for under $10. I was looking for a Widows Mite and this one stood out as it had a portrait when others did not. In any case after buying it I did some research and from what I read Widow's Mites used pictures of grain, anchors, and stars but not people. I'm pretty sure its "real" but not confident it's a Widow's Mite. Anyone have a clue?

I can't tell for sure, but I don't think that's a widow's mite. More likely a late Roman coin around the era of Arcadius, Honorius, or Theodosius or the like. Can you make out any of the lettering in the legend on the obverse?

BTW, welcome to this discussion board.

Style looks late 4th / 5th century to me. It does however have a hint of unofficial about it. This is not an area I'm particularly familiar in but would suggest Arcadius, Honorius, Joannes, Marcian, Leo I/II, or Zeno. I cant really see from the picture but can you match any of these legends with whats on the coin?

I think a closer photo would help as well. As soon as the coin arrives.

to the community.

I agree it appears to be late Roman. A larger picture would help.

The images are still pretty small. I have looked at my references and I can't seem to find a similar coin, so obviously I'm looking in the wrong places, eh? Now I'm curious. Perhaps someone will recognize it and let us both know. Sorry
