Just received my latest Early Commemorative in and I need advice as to grade. In your opinion, is this a weakly struck uncirculated example or a slightly circulated AU? I don't know much about the Denver mint and Early Commemoratives other than this was the first Early Commemorative Denver minted. All thoughts greatly appreciated. It doesn't make a lot of difference in the coin's value as 5,008 were minted and AU brings only slightly less than lower grades of UNC. Paleoguy45

It's an off bright color and there are many light scratches. I believe it was cleaned. Still, it's a nice coin with a low mintage.

I was looking forward to seeing your new 1933 d Oregon Trail. From your photo and examination of a few of my types I would say that it is in AU condition. I see some minor hair line, contact nicks, and slight abrasions that I would attribute to handling or "circulating". It looks like wear on the ox and the walking handler of this critter, as well as on the headdress, thigh, and bow tips. A weak strike may attribute to the noted wear but the nicks and small lines show wear.

This still is a great coin of one of the most appreciated designs ever conceived. Being the first Denver striking for a commemorative also seems to give it more value as this date is virtually the same mintage as the 1936 s but commands much more of a premium. This coin is on my wish list. If I were in charge of our mint I would resurrect this design for a commemorative dollar in 2026 but who knows what will happen over the next fifteen years until then.

Excellent and detailed evaluation indeed by muddler ... to which I concur and cannot add any additional value by repeating the same observations in my own words.

I'm not seeing any evidence of cleaning ... believe the scratches are the result of circulation wear.

Assume the coin PG has some mint luster ... cannot tell from the otherwise detailed photos.

The various nicks and bag marks lead me to believe this is an appx AU55 coin ... and a lovely example indeed of the first ever Denver mint issue of any USA commemorative coin.

Sidebar here ... amazed at the number of auctions for what is described as a 1920/1921 Pilgrim 'D' mint coin ... however we know that the incuse 'D' at Gov. Bradford elbow on the obverse is not a mintmark but the result of an afterthought (ooops) to include designer Cyrus E. Dallin initial in the hub ... and executed with what appears to be today to Denver mintmark punch.

Lovely 1933-D Oregon Trail ... thanks for sharing with us!

David

AU-55, and I would have jumped on that one, too.

Nice pickup, and a 1933-D Oregon is high on my want list.
I live in Denver, and I frequently visit the same Mint building in which your coin was made.

I've often thought this look was from some type of cleaning or pocket polishing. I'm always learning..... thankyou

PG, here is a nice 1928 Oregon at a decent starting price. The seller seems to have a lot of details slabbed coins for sale tho.

Thanks for the heads up Muddler. I'm trying to figure out what to sell to finance my next foray into the Commemorative world. I just bought another complete set of 95/96 Atlanta UNC Commem Dollars, so the pockets ain't jingling at the moment.

This is a beautiful coin either way. Good pick up. I also collect coins dated 1933 because that is the year my Dad was born. I have dozens of 1933 coins from all over the world. I also collect 1935 because it's the year my Mother was born.
