i am hungry for more coin reading, but I dont know what coin magazines are considered better than others and what is a good buy. I saw the thread where you can get coins for subscribing, very tempting! I need some help from the pros!

thanks,

the kurt.

I just subscribed to CoinValues. I looked at quite a few at Barnes & Noble and that one appealed to me the most. I liked the articles they had the best and they appeared to be the most informative. I like the article where they help you grade a particular coin each month. It is a really good article. They did Seated Liberty half dimes this month. The price guide they have is the best also (I know the grey sheet is better but the grey sheet is too rich for my blood and I'm not a dealer so I don't need that). I like getting the redboook each year but the prices in there are out of date before you even get it, this way I have something that is closer to the value each month. The prices in these books should never be used as a strict guideline anyway but rather for reference more than anything else. Coin World is ok but they don't have the price guide in it and it is covered in advertisements. I like to buy one at the coin shop every now and then but my personal preference is not to subscribe to it. Hope this helps.

TheKurt, each magazine out there is slightly different. Its like going to a car dealer and finding the car that is right for you. CoinWorld is a great magazine that has many in depth articles about coins. Each month they focus on a particular coin and the magazine usually contains 3 or 4 articles about it. What I like most about their magazine is the grading section, it is in full color and it goes through many different grades. The magazine you were referring to with the free coins in it is Coins Magazine. Coins Magazine has a variety of different articles about the hobby and the coins themselves. Unlike CoinWorld's price section, theirs lists mintage figure. I find mintage figures to be just as important as the price. A third magazine to consider is Coinage. Like Coins Magazine, Coinage has a variety of articles on various coins and the hobby. I find that Coinage magazine, has more articles on current mint products, whereas Coins and CoinWorld don't.
The best advice that I could give to you is go to your local book store and purchase a variety of magazines, read them and find which one appeals to you the most. If you are like me, then you will end up buying all three.

I would go with Coin World or Numismatic News. they are both weekly and give alot of info. Coin World is alittle bit more expensive but with that subscription you get coin value every month with it. also both of them have a 6 month rate as well so that way you can try them out. I think for the money both of these paper are wonderful.

I agree with the above posters so I really can't add much. However, I find Coin Values to be the most informative and always check the values listings for changes, increases and surprises!

thekurt if your looking for value you may want to subscribe to Coins. Subscribe to Coins for one year at $28.98 and get a free 2007 Silver Eagle. You are only paying about $1.00 per issue. I thought this was a good deal.

CoinWorld comes WEEKLY, as well as, Numismatic News so they would be your most up to date and if you need a hit every week like I do go with CoinWorld. CoinAge is a great magazine but news is slow in all magazines and behind the times due to publication deadlines. Also if you subscribe to CoinWorld you will get CoinValues magazine FREE every month with you subscription. For the money this is your best bet!

I agree you should spend a little time in a book store or place that sells such different magazines prior to starting a subscription. Occationally it is very difficult to stop a magazine subsription so make sure you pick the one(s)you really want.
Now here is something to think about. If you live in a large city or in an area where the crime rate is rather high, don't have magazines, books, pamphlets, etc delivered to your place. That is sort of advertising you want visitors when your not home. Where I live NO ONE gets coin, gun, knife, etc magazines. If they are to big to completely fit in a mail box they sometimes are left sticking out and with the names in full view. NO ONE orders items that may be left on a porch or in a door way. Recently a couple were arrested following a UPS truck and as they left the packages on the front porch, this pair would run up and take them. In such areas as I live it is best to buy coin mags at stores or at coin shows.
