Hello everyone:
I'm just wondering about the boutique of the Royal Canadian Mint at Downtown Vancouver since I live in the Greater Vancouver area and only 30 minutes away from Downtown Vancouver. Anyone know about their service qualities and prices? Last time I called and the person picked up the phone told me that for example, the parks Canada centennial coins were sold at a higher price because they were described as "collectable". (I think so, but online the price is at face value, and I wonder how people in the mint make money by selling those coins).
If you know about that boutique, please reply and I would appreciate it.

Went there twice. The first time Ms.Blunt was there to sign items,I wanted an uncirculated set for her to sign but the first two sales people had no idea what that was and insisted they only sold gold and silver coins, the third sales person made a phone call and finally located a set.The next time I asked for an O Canada set,had no patience for a sales person who knew nothing about their products, and went to a nearby coin shop where they know what they sell to make my purchase.
There's no profit to be made selling coins for face by the boutique or dealers, they are only avilable directly from the mint.

Almost sounds like RCM took Best Buy's training manual and started their own store....

Do you guys have Best Buy in Canada? If so, you would understand.

Always wait a few years before buying any R.C.M. coinage/collectibles. They will drop to half price and more depending on the product. Take for example the supposedly RARE 2002 Queen Mom silver dollar with a mintage of 5,000. They were not only sold out in a few hours of release, but were selling on E-bay for $1,000.00 + for several months after.
Now you can buy the same coin I.C.C.S. slabbed, PF-68 for a couple of hundred$'s! That's the beauty of collecting R.C.M. coins, the longer you wait, the cheaper they become.

Hi Petersun,

I've been there 4 times and on all four visits as DBM mentioned I was faced with young sales clerks that didn't know anything about coins. The shop is rather small and they don't have a large selection. As far as price goes, it's all the same prices as the mint sells them for. I didn't see any mark up in the sets.

I did purchase my 2011 Boreal Set and a 2011 Specimen Set there but when I had asked for the Boreal Set the young guy at that time had no idea what I was talking about and told me that they don't carry those coins. I had to take him over to the display case and show him the set.

In my opinion the only way I'd go back is if I wanted a set right away and didn't want to wait the week for shipping. Otherwise I'd order straight from the mint. If your in downtown and don't mind getting frustrated with the lack of knowledge I guess it's worth a stop in, but I wouldn't plan a trip into downtown just to go to the store.

The one that answered my phone didn't have good manner. He sounded very impatient and upset with my call. That person sounded like an university student finishing his job in a rush.

Sounds like he'd make a good manager at ICBC.
