Im looking to buy a 2 1/2 Indian and my first thought to find one was ebay. Now, my dealer says he could get me one but it might take a couple of months. I know that there are tons of fakes on ebay. How do you know if the coin is real or not. Are there an reputable dealers on ebay who are selling cheaper common date Indians?

THanks
Erik

If you are going to buy on ebay, I would suggust buying a coin that has been slabbed by a TPG over one that is raw.

Harlan Berk has very nice gold coins, surprisingly cheaper than some bidding on ebay. I just bought an 1853 gold dollar in AU-50 for $175. A simnilar coin, on which I was outbid, went for $202 on ebay.

I bought this 2 1/2 dollar Indian on ebay for 200.00 and I beleive its a MS-64 coin from my opinion and everyone elses who has graded the coin on here, so that is a very good deal, so there are deals to be had on ebay if you look

HJB is about as reputable of a dealer as you will ever find, if he says something is lightly cleaned then you can bet your bottom dollar that you would never be able to tell without using a miscroscope

I am also looking to buy an indian head quarter eagle this month. I plan to go with either HJB or ebay. If I go with ebay it will be a coin in a PCGS, NGC, or possibly ANACS holder. Being a novice at gold, (no gold in collection yet), I am not willing to gamble on getting a cleaned coin or something fake.

mine was a gamble but I figured at that price and with the detail it had I couldn't go wrong and I actually did very well because in 64 its about a 1100.00 coin and I paid 200 for it. And buy from people that you know will say if their coin has been cleaned or has problems and you will do alright

Buying raw gold coins on ebay is always a risk. But, if you do your homework and pay attention to things going on on ebay, you can find some good to great deals. The first thing is to check out the seller. Go to https://www.toolhaus.com and put their user name in there. You will see all their negative and neutral feedbacks. Read them all. Also look at their positive feedback. Many times buyers will put negative things in a positive rating so that they themselves don't get a retaliatory negative from the seller.

Look at the coin very carefully. If it has an unclear picture or really small and hard to see, be careful. Or, ask the seller to email you better pictures. If they don't have any or won't, avoid the coin. You have to be able to see the coin clearly in order to make a decision on whether you want to bid on the coin.

You can also save a copy of the coin, and use a program like Photoshop to look at it in a different color (like blue). This will highlight many imperfections in the coin you might not see in the regular picture.

Also, subscribe to Heritage Auctions (www.heritageauctions.com). You can go through their archives of closed auctions for any coin you can think of. This will give you a lot of coins (that are graded) to use to compare to the raw coin you want to bid on. This will give you a good idea of what price you want to offer.

This is what I did when I bought my first two raw gold coins. It was a great learning experience and a lot of fun.

Good Luck and have fun!!
