Buying raw gold coins on
ebay is always a risk. But, if you do your homework and pay attention to things going on on
ebay, you can find some good to great deals. The first thing is to check out the seller. Go to
https://www.toolhaus.com and put their user name in there. You will see all their negative and neutral feedbacks. Read them all. Also look at their positive feedback. Many times buyers will put negative things in a positive rating so that they themselves don't get a retaliatory negative from the seller.
Look at the coin very carefully. If it has an unclear picture or really small and hard to see, be careful. Or, ask the seller to email you better pictures. If they don't have any or won't, avoid the coin. You have to be able to see the coin clearly in order to make a decision on whether you want to bid on the coin.
You can also save a copy of the coin, and use a program like Photoshop to look at it in a different color (like blue). This will highlight many imperfections in the coin you might not see in the regular picture.
Also, subscribe to Heritage Auctions (www.heritageauctions.com). You can go through their archives of closed auctions for any coin you can think of. This will give you a lot of coins (that are graded) to use to compare to the raw coin you want to bid on. This will give you a good idea of what price you want to offer.
This is what I did when I bought my first two raw gold coins. It was a great learning experience and a lot of fun.
Good Luck and have fun!!
