Hi,

This was in a box of coins I got recently. It seems to be brass and 24mm in diameter. That's really all I can decern though. Any help appreciated - thanks

By matching the symbols on the coin with a list of Japanese Kanji characters on Wikipedia, then copy/pasting them into Google translate, I found out that this is a Japanese 5 Yen coin from 1948.

The obverse says "5 Yen", the top of the reverse says "Japan", and the bottom says the date.

Interesting pick up. I've not seen one like this. Cool.

I recently picked up one of these from a scratchtray; I hadn't seen one before, either.

It's a shame they didn't keep this design for the 5 yen. I think it looks better than the "tap washer" they've used since.
