I have been looking to get a toned penny for christmas. Just to bring some color into my collection. What do you think about this one? AT or NT?

What do you know about the coin? I've seen PCGS slabbed cents with the same purples. I'd make an arrangement with the seller that you'll buy it and have it graded and if it comes back GENUINE then they will buy it back and cover half the submission costs. That's reasonable.

Well I just emailed the guy asking him what he knew about it. I have been buying from him for a few weeks and he seems to be pretty honest. I'll let you guys know what he says when I get a reply.
In the meantime I'm still intrested in any of you guys opinions!

I can't say for sure but the toning does look a bit odd.

I should have added that in my opinion, the coin just looks too "Over the top" with a lot of different toning.

The toning does not look natural to me at all. You can get some really nice toned LWC's if your patient. I would steer away from this one.

Artificial toning is my guess.

Yea I think I am going to pass on this one. The seller said he wasnt sure if it was NT, and he wouldnt risk the grading fees on it. So to me that means its AT
Well my search continues! anyone wanna throw me a bone? Not having too much luck finding anything good.

And your opinions saying that is purposeful toning are based on what? The color being over the top? Not really a scientific basis now is it? It just looks wrong...equally scientific.

Truth is, there is absolutely NO way you can say what happened to this coin. Any statement will be SOLELY a non factual based opinion and nothing more.

If you like the way the coin looks, get it. I would add that one to my collection.

I do like how it looks but I dont want to pay a premium for something I can do myself. I could sit here and tone coins all day long for cheaper

i think you are making the right choice in passing. The coin may very well be NT. Usually, I've seen this coloration in proofs that have been stored in less than ideal circumstances. The best I've seen this type of coin come back-in proof mind you- with this kind of toning is PR-66. Which may mean that TPGs don't like the color for eye appeal.

personally, collecting copper coins in red just scares me.

Here is a coin that was toned using electrolysis then a darkener was used on the grey areas. The electrolysis leaves the coin with some areas an ugly grey and the rest will show red and purple. There are all kinds of ways to tone coins whichever was used I dont know but this is an artificial toning.

How much was the seller asking for this one?

Unless this coin would grade MS66 or better, I can't see as to why anyone would have it slabbed.

When you bake coins it does the same thing and leaves the coins with some nice colors and some grey baked looking colors.

I think he wasnts right around $20 for it. not a bad price I guess. But like I said I would rather have one thats NT. I dont think its baked I think it would have more of an even color on both sides eg since pennies are so small I dont think it would have a natural copper color on one side and purple right over that copper spot on the other side. Also if its AT I dont think he did it he only has a couple coins that are toned and they look NT
