The latest CNA journal has an interestng piece on 1968 ten cent coins. It talks a bit about the existence of 1968 silver 10 cent coins minted at Philadelphia. While Charlton lists Philadelphia nickel ten cent coins, it does not list silver ones. Does anyone have a view on their rarity? Are they rare or have people generally not tried to look for them? Has anyone tried to find one?

Now that you mentioned it , I've never heard about it but I have a roll of 68 silvers in the cupboard behind me. Same method of diagnosis?

Apparently. The latest journal is in the members only section. The Philadelphia reeding has more of a flat bottom.

OK I think I have two POTENTIAL candidates already (out of a roll of mostly unc), no idea how I'm going to get a decent picture but I'll try tomorrow with natural light when I cane use the timer etc..

Are they supposed to be uncommon?

I stand corrected, there are 4 types, the 2 nickel and 2 silver. I went through my silver 1968 (19) and found 13 Ottawa v bottoms and 6 Philly flat bottoms.

I also have a mint #
Ottawa 87,412,000
Philly 85,833,929
Silver 70,460,000

Don't ask me where I got the #'s from because I don't remember.

I continue to look at my ten cent coins and I think I am getting a headache. The more I look at reeding, the more I like cents!

OK, so here are three photos. I thought I had everything straight but now I am unsure. Opinions?

Two side by side coins:

Dunno if this helps anyone, but to me C appears cupped between raised letter I that open wider at top and bottom, while A looks like a groove that goes across the entire edge.

That was the marker I was relying on based on my matching of that to the grooves, but I thought the "across edge" one was the Canadian one. So I am confused at this point. Anyone have an ICCS-certified Philadelphia coin that they can post the edge of?

Do remember that not every reeded coin is fully struck with the 'third die' (the collar). You need to rely on the reed shape, not how it was struck and whether the reeding is completely across the rim. Maybe I should try to get my hands on an example of each, and take them down to the SEM lab for some really detailed photos...
