I questioned the seller's description and received this reply;
"Dear ycc511,
As per amendments in Item description and also Item Title on all listings ,
the wording uncirculated is not the grading, it simply means these coins
have not seen the light of day for 30-40 yrs, these coins have never been
in the marketplace before... hence the wording in the title has been
amended to (Uncirc in Market) which is shortened for uncirculated in the
Marketplace before....
All of our coins come from deceased estates... we
are not coin dealers, and we definitely do not grade as its the most
contenious issue within the industry as everybody has a different
opinion.... I'm sorry for the mis-understanding, but further more if the
coin was uncirculated, I would use the wording UNC as this is universially
used in the industry as meaning mint like coins.....
Pls decide your
own grading and bid accordingly..... considering the current value for this
coin in UNC is $20 and our price is starting at $3 again too a certain
degree gives you an indication of the grading?

What a load of BS. Turns me right off even considering any coins from this seller, even though some look quite good.

he he when I first saw the pic I thought if that's Uncirculated I'm a unicorn.
If you see feedback they have sold 117 items, they know what there doing.
I have sold 47 items and I sure know my Uncirculated from Circulated coins.

  SUCCESS  I responded to the seller's reply pointing out that "uncirculated" already has a well established and understood meaning and it is not on to just redefine the word to suit yourself. Several hours later a further reply partly saying "I find it hard to see that I'm not giving the buyer enough info in regards to my definition of the words uncirculated.... ". Then after another 40 minutes another message saying "The uncirculated wording in the Title of all listings has been removed as it was causing confusion to the buyers, those with bids can not be amended.... ". A check of listings shows titles no longer say uncirculated but description still says it. However, it is not now going to show in most searches. I wonder how many other people also queried this? I suspect quite a few. Jeff |

People new to buying coins, or those buying them as presents will likely get burnt. I opened a few pennies out of curiosity.
Uncirculated Penny = no centre diamond and 4 pearls.
With him calling his store "KJP Coins&Notes" you'd hope he'd have half a brain.

Actually; let me get pissy with the phrase 'deceased estate' which he has used. If any normal person found this load of rubbish circulated coins surely they would take them to the bank and get face value rather than pretending they are worth something. Coins I get in change from Coles are better than his stock.

The previous post about pearls and diamonds threw me off...then I remembered this was discussing Aussie coins.
When I read "let me get pissy with the phrase 'deceased estate'...Coins I get in change from Coles are better than his stock." I couldn't help but laugh! I love the aussie way of expression. I sure do wish I was back in WA again.

I just sold some 2011 bags (Armaguard, UNC) on ebay for twice face value and thought I was doing well. Same coins I have sold to forum members, friend and acquaintances for 25% premium. Maybe I should be advertising them as "choice UNC", "scarce", "rare" etc. (they are none of those things) and I could ask more.  Oh, and I should charge much more for postage too. At present I have the postage calculator set to show Australia Post rate less 20%. I use MUH stamps that I get for 75% of face value (plus postage) and I also consider packing cost is part of the sale costs. Of course, I am selling to supplement my coin collecting obsession addiction habit hobby and like to see collectible coins go to a good home. I must be rather naive. I don't know that we have ever reached a consensus of exactly what "scarce" is but my gut feeling is that a scarce coin might turn up, on average, noodling around 2,000 to 5,000 similar type coins. How can he say
"UNC" = uncirculated
but also say
"uncirculated" is able to be used some other way.
On balance it appears to be deliberately deceptive.

This seller describes all the coins listed as "uncirculated". Some may be but not this one! However, does have lots of coins that may be of interest. Jeff I'd like to agree Jeff but looking at that pic I just can't do it sorry..how's about five  EF..did they even read their description. I don't know about anyone else but I'd give it a VG not EF. And here I was giving my notes a bad grade if that's EF. How would you grade it Jeff |

The note is from a different seller. The coin seller is now putting more listings on and no longer calling them uncirculated. He has also amended most of the descriptions to exude any suggestion a coin is uncirculated. And, he attached his answer to my initial question to the listing for this particular coin. AMAZING (but silly) The note I would put maybe fine; no tears that I can see. I don't want to be uncharitable at Christmas. However photos/scans are rather overexposed which does lighten it up considerably -I wonder how dirty it really is. Jeff Edited by Jeff

One of my customers got stung by this guy this week, and at least left a neg for him. http://www.ebay.com/itm/190591357157#ht_656wt_932sold as gold. I noticed the outer is for a 1/2 oz Ag ox round, to tart it up I presume. I sometimes sell business strike as unc "sometimes" If the coin out of the roll/bag is the best one in the roll/bag. The stuff you would happily send to pcgs etc to get graded. I know its not technically correct. but nothing like the above examples. |
