Uncirculated?

I don't think the seller in the first post is deliberately trying to rip anyone off, he's just ignorant of our specialty, despite his name. He saw a term being used on coins that brought big bucks, and figured it applied to his merchandise.

Uncirculated = "not in circulation" to 99% of people on the street. Only coin and note collectors give it a different meaning.

Not much different than people who call to sell 19th century coins "in the original plastic". He needs educated, not condemned.

Actually it is technically correct. Since neither you, I or a TPG has any way of knowing what happened to a coin after it left the die, coins are graded on evidence of circulation, ie, wear. Even if you watch a coin get run over by a steamroller, if it still looks uncirculated (MS), it is MS.

Don't get me started on TPG that will give a MS designation to a coin with a big fat ugly fingerprint.
