I'm not into bills. Mostly I stick to coins but I jumped over to this forum while surfing and was wondering if anyone can tell me anything about the owl on the 1 dollar bill? Why it's there? What it is supposed to represent? I've heard it's a masonic symbol.
For anyone who doesn't know about it, it's on the front of the bill, on the border around the top right numeral 1. Sitting on the top left curve of the border. Just wondering.

Sure it's not a cat? Or an upside-down icicle about to form?

I always assumed the engravers put the small detailsf in there to help distinguish between real and counterfit bills. There are small details on the other bills too. I suspect the owl symbolizes wisdom, keeping in the tradition of reusing classical motifs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athena

As Sap pointed out in this thread, it's not an owl (or a spider or any other animal). It's just part of the background guilloche pattern on the note and is identical in size and structure to the top of the triangular structure seen elsewhere on the note.

Why make such a big deal about a microscopic squiggle that looks vaguely like one thing or another depending on who looks at it? I mean, if you haven't noticed, there's a GIANT PYRAMID WITH A FLOATING EYE ABOVE IT ON THE REVERSE OF THE NOTE! That's enough weirdness right there in plain sight to occupy us all for years without needing to bring a magnifying glass into the discussion...
