For some reason I am obsessed with the 1857 Smoking Seated Liberty quarter, not that I smoke or promote it, but I guess it is a form of taboo. I have read that the Top III TPG do not even recognize it for attribution. I would like to insert this "variety" in my 7070. Does anybody have or seen one of these?

I read that article...but noticed that it didn't say what mint the specimens involved came from. Have you found that little scarp of fact yet? I'll have to check my collection. I think I have a quarter from that year!

Edited for spelling.

Nope, not me. Neither my 1857 nor 1857 O Quarter have the "butt".

Mine did have a cigar but quit smoking in 1865 after the war.

Interesting.

I do not have an 1857 Seated Liberty quarter. I only have an 1853, 1856, and 1877 occupying the three spots in my 7070.

The illustrated "DGS" slab did not identify a MM, so it presumed that it is a Philly strike.
