Greetings, Just received a lot of coins on ebay and to my surprise I came across this 1885 nickel. Assuming it's real, is there anything I can do to improve the appearance or should I just leave it be and possibly sell it later as-is? Thanks in advance!

Not much. Looks like it was a buried coin.

I saw an uglier one this week. I think it's cool. Don't think you can do much to improve it, though.

It's not really that bad considering what it is and it has value. In fact, I'd probably grade it FA-2 even, and not PO-1.
There's not really anything that can be done to "help" it. This coin would easily sell. If you cleaned it in some way you'd lower its value.

I'd leave it just like it is, I think for a key date it has character, so many you see are slick smooth cleaned examples. I like it as it is.

Thanks all for the guidance! I checked ebay's completed listings and definitely saw a few of them that were worse than this and brought decent money. I'm not really into nickels so I wasn't exactly sure if there was anything different about them as far as restoration goes. Coinstar: this was in a lot of bulk Liberty nickels, which also included almost all other dates (no 1886 or 12-s, however) in mostly low grade, so I was quite happy. I figured I should get a little more exposure to the series.

I am amazingly jealous of your find. That is the hole in my V nickel collection that I have been unable to fill. You should thank your lucky (coin)stars for that find!

Terrific find! Cherrying something of that value is always fun. It looks to have VG-ish detail to me, so should bring $150-$200 or so anyway.

I agree to leave it alone. For a rare coin like that you don't want to take a chance on messing it up even more.

I had an 1886 that looked liked that. I got $50 for it. Leave it alone and someone (or you) will use as a hole filler.

Leave it alone, it is desirable as it is. You don't want to take any chances of injuring it further. It is rough but has some detail and a strong date. There are a lot of collectors that would love to have that coin.
